New York Mini About the New York Mini Throughout the period of The Chinese Exclusion Act , Chinese-American communities began to play in fellowship tournaments.

The New York Mini was inspired by the game of 9-man volleyball – a game that originated in China in the 1920’s when American missionaries introduced the variant in Tai-Shan. As the laws against immigration and naturalization continued to isolate Chinese Americans, these tournaments united the Chinatown community to bond and forge friendships. Since that time, even as gentrification gradually shif

ted Chinese Americans away from Chinatown communities, the game became increasingly popularized within the Asian American volleyball communities across North America. Today, the New York Mini represents the tradition and heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation and is a opportunity for Asian-Americans to celebrate their heritage and build friendships across the major Asian communities on the East Coast through volleyball.

What an incredible weekend of 9-Man volleyball!

Despite the heat, humidity, hazy skies, passing rain, and a weekend full of excitement, 68 teams from across North America came together to compete, reconnect, and celebrate our amazing volleyball community.

Congratulations to all of our Gold, Silver, and Bronze Bracket Champions in both the Men's and Women's divisions, and to every team that competed with passion, sportsmanship, and heart throughout the weekend.
