SHOULD ARSENAL SWAP GYÖKERES FOR ÁLVAREZ?
Two strikers. Two debuts. But not even close to the same challenge.
Let's get one thing straight before we compare the numbers. Julián Álvarez arrived at Manchester City and walked into a ready-made machine. Kevin De Bruyne pulling the strings. Phil Foden creating chaos. Rodri controlling every game from midfield. And most importantly — Erling Haaland ahead of him in the pecking order, hoovering up goals at a rate nobody in football history had ever seen. Álvarez wasn't the main man. He was a highly talented piece in an already complete puzzle.
Viktor Gyökeres arrived at Arsenal and was handed the keys. No world-class creator already doing the hard work for him. No established striker ahead of him setting the template. He was the solution to a problem Arsenal had been trying to fix for years — the lack of a genuine, reliable No.9. The pressure was entirely on his shoulders from matchday one.
Now look at the numbers with that context in mind.
Álvarez scored 17 goals in 49 appearances at City — impressive, but he was operating in a system so dominant that chances were being created on an industrial scale every single game. His teammates were among the best in the world at putting him in positions to score. The work was shared across an elite squad.
Gyökeres scored 14 Premier League goals alone in his debut season, finishing as one of the top scorers in the division, while also contributing in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He did this while leading Arsenal's press, making more off-the-ball runs into the opposition box than any other player in the league, and consistently carrying the physical burden of being the focal point of the attack week in, week out.
Arsenal's attack was built around him. City's attack was already built before Álvarez even arrived.
And then Álvarez left for Atlético Madrid — and the truth came out.
At Manchester City, Álvarez registered 36 goals and 17 assists across 103 games over two seasons. Good numbers. But remove the De Bruyne passes, the Foden combinations, the Rodri recycling, and the Haaland distraction pulling every defender away — and what happens?
He moves to Atlético Madrid, a team without that level of world-class infrastructure around him, and the numbers tell a very different story. In his debut season at Atlético he scored 29 goals — a decent return — but in his second season, 2025/26, he managed just 20 goals across 49 appearances in all competitions, with only 8 of those coming in La Liga. For a player who was supposedly one of the world's best strikers, those are numbers you would expect from a solid squad player, not an elite No.9.
The reason is simple. At City, everything around Álvarez was elite. At Atlético, he is the one expected to carry the load — and the output has dropped noticeably. Sound familiar? That is exactly the situation Gyökeres walked into at Arsenal from day one, and he thrived in it.
The trophies argument only goes so far too.
Yes, Álvarez won the Treble and the World Cup in the same year at City — genuinely historic. But how much of that was Álvarez and how much was just the Manchester City machine doing what it does? Gyökeres helped Arsenal win the Premier League title as the undisputed main striker, with the weight of the entire attack on his back from the first whistle of the season.
The Verdict
Should Arsenal swap Gyökeres for Álvarez? Absolutely not. The evidence is now stacked on both sides of the argument. Álvarez thrived at City because City made everyone around them look better. The moment he moved to a team where he had to carry real responsibility, his numbers dropped. Gyökeres has been doing exactly that — carrying the load — since the day he walked through Arsenal's door, and he has delivered every single time.
Same position. Very different burdens. The answer is clear — keep Gyökeres.
