Cubs Sweep Double Header Vs North London Nationals
The Kincardine Cubs travelled to Exeter on Saturday to play a twin-bill against the North London Nationals. Kincardine came out on top in both games, holding on for a 10-9 win in the opener, and then coming back from a 5 run deficit in the 3rd inning to score 17 unanswered runs in a 19-7 victory in the second game.
In game 1, Kincardine built a 6-run lead in the fifth inning and then held off North London’s charge for a 10-9 victory. London closed the gap by scoring on a home run, a hit by pitch, a single, and an error.
Kincardine collected 15 hits and North London had five in the high-scoring affair.
North London got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Brandon Rauth singled down the right field line, and Zack Salliss walked, each scoring one run.
Kincardine flipped the game on its head in the top of the third, scoring five runs on four hits to take the lead, 6-2. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Jordan Beisel following a 7-pitch at-bat that drove in two.
Four more Cubs runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 10-4. Robert McGregor homered to right field, scoring two runs, Curtis McCabe singled, scoring one run, and Travis Goll singled, scoring one run.
Salliss homered to left field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth for North London.
McCabe earned the win for Kincardine. The reliever surrendered two hits and two runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking five. Wyatt Kerr took the loss for North London. The hurler went four innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking two. Ryan Bester started the game for Kincardine. The lefty surrendered one hit and two runs over one inning, striking out three and walking four. Sheldon McBride collected the save. Travis Anderson and McGregor each appeared in relief for the Cubs.
Anderson, Zane Livingston, Beisel, Cody Thompson, McCabe, and Kevin Zettler each collected two hits for Kincardine. McGregor, Beisel, and McCabe each drove in two runs for the Cubs. Bester, Beisel, and Zettler each stole multiple bases for Kincardine. Kincardine turned one double play in the game.
In game 2, Kincardine trailed by as many as five, but came back to best North London, 19-7.
Zane Livingston collected four hits in four at bats in the win. Livingston singled in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings
North London jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after David Carson singled, scoring two runs, Sean Groves singled, scoring two runs, and Randy Nguyen drew a walk, scoring one run. They added one run in the second after Brandon Rauth doubled down the right field line on an 0-2 count. A double by Nguyen extended the Nationals lead to 7-2 in the top of the third inning.
Kincardine took the lead, 8-7, in the bottom of the fourth thanks to singles by Livingston, and Ryan Bester.
Kincardine added nine more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on six hits. Greg Stepaniak singled, scoring one run, Jordan Beisel drew a walk, scoring one run, K Mathers singled, scoring one run, Kevin Zettler singled, scoring two runs, Livingston singled, scoring one run, and Sheldon McBride homered to right field, scoring three runs to walk the game off.
Stepaniak earned the win for the Cubs. The hurler surrendered seven hits and two runs over five innings, striking out one and walking three. Nguyen took the loss for North London Nationals Senior. The hurler went four innings, surrendering 10 runs on 12 hits, striking out five and walking two. McBride stepped on the hill first for the Cubs. The starter gave up three hits and five runs over one inning, striking out three and walking five.
Kincardine piled up 19 hits in the game. Bester drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Cubs with four runs batted in. The infielder went 3-for-3 in the game. Travis Anderson, Stepaniak, Mathers, and Zettler each collected multiple hits for Kincardine. Livingston and Zettler each stole multiple bases. Kincardine turned two double plays in the game.
The Cubs will travel to London in one week for a rematch with the London Talons, who the Cubs beat at Tout Field two weeks ago.
