Paddle and Hum

Paddle and Hum Some years ago, I sought to build a canoe that was small, lightweight, and stable.

Paddle and Hum now produces 9' 6" long, durable solo canoes weighing less than 27 lbs.

The day began here and it ended here with evening light slipping away through the trees. A little world of its own. Tailpipes roar not far from goslings being gently guided toward water. The sun is but an echo now so ears reach further than sight while street lights become flag poles of gold and silver shimmering far into the water. I am so thankful for times like these.

When it comes to wildlife, the Seine River in Winnipeg does not disappoint. Bobbing just under a perched Bald Eagle, observing the crested head of a Kingfisher, making eye contact with a Muskrat and sneaking up behind Canadas’s national rodent closer than I ever have - this was a paddle to remember.

Trip Log

“Anybody who tells you portaging is fun is either lying or crazy,” states Bill Mason in his film, ‘Waterwalker’.

Then he clarifies, “Now the walk back for the second load…that’s the part I like.”

What if you have it all with you on the first trip?

Celebrate your surroundings.

Record shoppers attended this year’s Third and Bird spring sale - a great weekend. Among those to lift a canoe this weekend was Olympic Olive Oil’s youngest employee who did it with the same smooth ease their shot sample went down for me.

Stin iyía mas! (Cheers!) to great market neighbours!

An early morning paddle provided an exquisite table setting of delights: after knifing my canoe through positively floral designs of undulating and ornate plate glass ice that covered a good portion of the Bunns Creek estuary, I came upon rows of dinner bells clinging to twigs and branches a few inches above the spring water. Apparently the river had dropped overnight at a rate just slow enough to freeze water around already forming stalactites.

That was just the first course. Beneath the clear blue ceiling of this breakfast nook, sparkling in the sun, were dozens of what looked like little wine goblets hung upside down from frosted round racks encircling trunks and suspended from branches. Again, just a few inches from the water.

A morning well paddled. I return home satisfied.
