Paddle and Hum

Paddle and Hum Some years ago, I sought to build a canoe that was small, lightweight, and stable.

Paddle and Hum now produces 9' 6" long, durable solo canoes weighing less than 27 lbs.

A mosquito bite on my backside through the canoe seat is a low blow on such a beautiful evening. A headwind promised to hide me from the bugs or help me along against the current, which was formidable as the creek was in flood stage. The evening sun, on this unexpected paddle, highlighted views of green carpets among larger flora along the eastern shore. A beaver sighting led shortly to another - this one betrayed by his contented chewing. I came within a few feet of him, beady eyes and all.

How pleasant is the paddle back! Easy strokes now, careless with leisure but the wind has broken its promise and I must release my feet to the mosquitoes so that my eyes , ears and nose can attend to the beauty of this evening. A robin welcomes the setting sun, now about a hands-width above the horizon. It reflects off the hue of the river, which is, in my opinion, decidedly ‘agricultural brown’. Tall grasses, with their feet in the water, lean over, perhaps to see their reflection.
I am paddling the rains of this morning and many days before.

Periodically the foliage offers a brief glimpse deep inside the bird-speckled forest and tiny bits of sun explode, intense, narrow and white. Suddenly the bank opens up and the sun washes upon the eastern shore - a seeming stage, grasses and expectant trees waiting for what small and likely unseen drama that will unfold in this quiet backwards river. I paddle on but offer my gratitude.

Thank-you, La Salle

One of the benefits of living near a body of water is visiting it frequently. My canoe ‘trips’ are seldom more than an hour or two and often to the same locations which allows such variety.

I can do this because I have a boat that doesn’t break me to load or carry it as it is less than 27 lbs. and under 10’ long.

If you’re interested in seeing how Paddle and Hum can get you back in the water, come by Princess Autos’ grand opening this weekend and ‘pick up’ a canoe.

The day began here and it ended here with evening light slipping away through the trees. A little world of its own. Tailpipes roar not far from goslings being gently guided toward water. The sun is but an echo now so ears reach further than sight while street lights become flag poles of gold and silver shimmering far into the water. I am so thankful for times like these.

When it comes to wildlife, the Seine River in Winnipeg does not disappoint. Bobbing just under a perched Bald Eagle, observing the crested head of a Kingfisher, making eye contact with a Muskrat and sneaking up behind Canadas’s national rodent closer than I ever have - this was a paddle to remember.
