Tesshin Dojo - 徹心道場 Welcome to Tesshin Dojo (徹心道場) teaching the Japanese art of Kendo (剣道); The way of the Sword. Tesshin Dojo strives not only “how to do”, but also “how to be”.

Welcome to Tesshin Dojo (徹心道場), teaching the Japanese art of Kendo(剣道); The way of the Sword. Kendo is a fast paced and dynamic martial art practiced by millions of people in Japan and has a very fast growing international community. Kendo takes its traditions and culture from the age of the samurai however today's kendo is largely related to personal discovery and growth through correct and rigorous training. Kendo’s competitive component boasts world championships held every 3 years involving over 50 countries displaying the “sports” strongest athletic examples. Kendo can be experienced and practiced on multiple levels making it an excellent path for many.

“Kendo for Kids -Tesshin at CJCA” is back!

Following a wonderful response to our spring program, “Kendo for Kids – Tesshin at CJCA” is returning this fall!

This free 8-week program introduces children to the basics of Japanese kendo and culture through fun and engaging activities.

Through guided practice and positive challenges, children stay active while learning kendo fundamentals in a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment. The program also introduces basic Japanese language, dojo manners, and the values and traditions connected to kendo. 🙂

✨ Learn basic kendo movements and footwork
✨ Learn Japanese dojo etiquette and manners (Reiho)
✨ Try shinai practice
✨ Build focus, confidence and respect

👦 Ages 5–12
📍 Calgary Japanese Community Association (CJCA, 2236 29St. SW)
🗓️Thursdays, 6pm to 7:30pm (to 6:45pm for 5-7 yo), October 1 to November 19, 2026
🏫Free of charge thanks to the support of CJCA Calgary Nikkei Cultural Fund

Tesshin’s dear friend, Ayumi Nemoto, is coming to Calgary!
Let’s practice together on Saturday, September 26!

Ayumi has represented Miyagi Prefecture at the All Japan Inter-Prefectural Women’s Kendo Tournament for three consecutive years. She is also actively involved as a kendo coach at a high school in Japan.

We’re very excited to welcome her to Calgary and share some keiko together!

The Art of Kendo, Sunday, September 6, 2026 at Mount Royal University

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our special event at Mount Royal University on September 6! We’re happy to say that it was a great success, with many participants coming to learn about kendo and Japanese culture.

A special thank you to Dr. Kimura, Mr. Ichihashi, and Mr. Miyash*ta (Shion Miyash*ta 宮下史音 ) for sharing their knowledge and insights through their presentations. We should mention that participants in the kendo experience and beginners had the special opportunity to learn how to properly grip a shinai and practice basic swings with Mr.Miyash*ta, a two-time Canadian kendo champion.

We would also like to thank Ms. Pratt, Japanese Language and Cultural Instructor at MRU, for her support in making this event possible.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, asked questions, and showed interest in kendo and Japanese culture. And of course, thank you to Westhead Sensei (David Westhead ) for sharing his knowledge and passion for kendo with everyone!

We are grateful that we had the opportunity to hold this event this during Japanese Heritage Month. We hope it inspired more people to discover and appreciate the beauty of kendo and Japanese culture.

Tesshin is hosting a special event “The Art of Kendo”this Sunday, September 6th, aimed at promoting and sharing Japanese culture with the Calgary community🍁

What is kendo? Learn about its cultural background, values, and philosophy, and how these ideas can connect with Western audiences.

Presented by David Westhead, founder and head instructor of Tesshin and General Manager of Team Canada.

② Explore the World of Kendo Equipment
Discover the craftsmanship and wisdom behind kendo equipment.

Mr. Akinori Ichihashi, owner of Nishimura Equipment Store in Japan, will introduce a variety of kendo equipment, including their functions, materials, and unique features.

③ Experience Kendo
Try kendo yourself in a guided session!

You’ll also have a special opportunity to practice alongside Shion Miyash*ta, a two-time Canadian Kendo Champion and current member of Team Canada.

A little while ago, our report on the kids kendo program, “Kendo for Kids – Tesshin at CJCA,” was featured in the CJCA newsletter (Calgary Japanese Community Association ).

It was a wonderful opportunity to offer children in the community a chance to experience Kendo and Japanese martial arts (budo) culture.
