Located conveniently at the Frank Kennedy Center on campus at the University of Manitoba, Offenberger Muay Thai is a great place for anyone new or experienced in muay Thai, or kickboxing, to learn the art and to enjoy their training. Muay Thai is a form of stand-up combat that also utilizes various clinching mechanics. It is often referred to as the "art/science of the eight limbs" as it utilizes
punches, kicks, knees and elbows as eight points of contact, as opposed to two points (fists) found in boxing or four points (fists and feet) in kickboxing. At OMT, an emphasis is placed on leading by example and everyone is expected to train hard every class to challenge not only themselves, but also their training partners and the class as a whole. The beginner class serves as a launching pad of sorts, as individuals new to muay Thai are introduced to all facets of the art and to the various training methods. From a demanding physical regimen to fundamental techniques and basic pad drills, an emphasis is placed upon building an understanding and passion for muay Thai. Those who complete the beginner class, or possess sufficient prior experience, are encouraged to join our advanced class where the foundation established in the beginner class is developed. Here an emphasis is placed upon sparring, advanced pad drills, and expanding/refining one's repertoire of techniques and physical abilities. Aside from making the jump from the beginner class to the advanced class, there is no belt testing at OMT. My philosophy is to not focus on the objective, but the journey. Every athlete develops differently and brings something unique to the class. As such, one's skill is not determined by a belt, but through his or her performances in the gym.
