🏒 BEHIND THE LOGO: WHY 31 POINTS?

The Toronto Maple Leafs crest may look like a straightforward maple leaf, but almost every detail represents part of the franchise’s history.

Toronto introduced this version for its 2016–17 centennial season. The design was inspired by the crest worn during the team’s championship years from the 1940s through the 1960s, but its details were deliberately chosen to tell a larger story.

The leaf has **31 points**, representing 1931—the year Maple Leaf Gardens opened.

It also contains **17 veins**, marking the franchise’s founding in 1917. Look at the upper portion of the crest and you’ll find **13 veins**, commemorating Toronto’s 13 Stanley Cup championships.

The surrounding outline used on an earlier version of the crest was removed, creating the cleaner and bolder design worn today.

That means the logo doesn’t simply represent Toronto or Canada. Its shape records the team’s original home, founding year and championship history—all inside one maple leaf.

🏈 BEHIND THE LOGO: WHY ONLY ONE SIDE?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only NFL team that places its logo on just one side of its helmet—but the tradition began as a temporary experiment.

In 1962, Cleveland-based Republic Steel suggested that Pittsburgh use the Steelmark, an emblem created to represent the American steel industry. The three four-pointed shapes are called hypocycloids. Their colours eventually came to represent three materials used in steelmaking: yellow for coal, orange for iron ore and blue for steel scrap.

Steelers owner Art Rooney Sr. wasn’t certain how the new logo would look on the team’s gold helmets, so equipment manager Jack Hart was instructed to apply it only to the right side as a test.

That season, Pittsburgh finished 9–5—the most successful season in franchise history at the time—and qualified for the Playoff Bowl. The team switched to black helmets for that game, making the Steelmark stand out even more.

Pittsburgh later received permission to change “Steel” to “Steelers” and changed the orange hypocycloid to red. The one-sided placement remained, turning a temporary test into one of football’s most recognizable traditions.

🏒 BEHIND THE LOGO: WHY DOES DETROIT HAVE A WINGED WHEEL?

The Winged Wheel looks as though it was created specifically for the Motor City—but its story actually begins in Montreal.

Before coming to Detroit, team owner James Norris had ties to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association’s hockey club, known as the Winged Wheelers. The club used a wheel with wings as its symbol and became an early Stanley Cup champion.

When Norris purchased the Detroit Falcons in 1932, he renamed them the Red Wings and adapted the Winged Wheel as the team’s new logo. The design’s connection to transportation made it a perfect fit for Detroit’s booming automobile industry.

The Winged Wheel first appeared in 1932 and has remained remarkably consistent ever since. It was refined slightly in 1948, when the wheel was made smaller, but the basic design has now represented Detroit hockey for more than 90 years.

This Detroit Red Wings jacket carries one of hockey’s most recognizable—and enduring—symbols.
