NSA Athlete Story
Florian Wilmsmann: From Whitehorse to the World Stage
Last November, German ski cross athlete Florian Wilmsmann arrived in Whitehorse with members of the German National Ski Cross Team looking for a place to train. They found Northern Strength Academy.
While the team was training at NSA, Ben McPherson, NSA’s Head of Performance and Sport Science, offered to put Florian through some of our sport-science testing. The goal was simple: use objective data to better understand how he produced force, velocity and power, identify areas that could be improved in the gym, and determine how those changes could translate to performance on snow.
Florian returned to Europe and went on to have another outstanding international season. He recorded five World Cup podiums, including a World Cup victory at Val di Fassa, represented Germany at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and finished the World Cup season ranked #4 in men’s ski cross. After the season, Florian reached back out to Ben and asked if NSA could take over his strength and conditioning remotely — from Whitehorse to Germany.
Throughout the spring, summer and fall, Florian and Ben have worked together almost daily. Coming off a high ankle sprain at the end of his season, the first priority was getting Florian healthy.
From there, the focus shifted toward systematically improving the physical qualities that matter in ski cross: force, velocity, power and the ability to express those qualities on snow. The progress has been substantial
What makes Florian special though is his commitment to the process. He communicates with Ben almost every day — sending training updates, feedback, video and the small details that allow us to continually adjust loads, exercises and training variables. That communication gives us the ability to coach an athlete thousands of kilometres away with the same attention to detail we bring to athletes training on the floor at NSA.
