We're kicking off our latest Showcase Chairlift construction update with a question on everyone's mind: Why does Tower 5 (lead picture) look so different?
The backstory? During site investigations, engineers discovered buried glacial ice beneath the planned foundation area. The solution: anchor the tower directly into surrounding bedrock using a unique cantilevered design.
The result? A stable long-term foundation with no impact on the glacial ice, minimal disturbance to the alpine environment, and a look unlike any other lift tower on the mountain.
Is it secure and safe? Absolutely. Extensive geotechnical investigations were completed to evaluate bedrock conditions, and the structure was designed by specialized engineers, independently reviewed, and is subject to rigorous inspection and testing.
Will it be visible once the snow falls? The portion extending from the cliff face will remain visible. The rest will be buried beneath the snowpack.
Has Whistler Blackcomb done this before? Yes! The old Big Red chairlift had a similar cantilevered design on one of its towers. It is common in the world of chairlifts!
The Showcase Chairlift project is moving along, with all towers and both lift terminals fully installed, and the haul rope (that big cord that will carry the chairs) spliced and ready for installation. Once complete, Showcase Chairlift will provide faster, easier access to some of Blackcomb's best alpine terrain.
