Sent from a friend; bear checking out the narrows for a drink and (hopefully) some delicious snacks (maybe those beavers)🦫. 🤣🤣🤭

Little family chill time together…
Check out those talons.

🦫 We have a busy beaver(s)on the lake this year and they’re going to town on the shoreline, especially in the narrows. They look like a clear cutting logging company at this point. Haven’t seen them this destructive to big trees in years. Originally we thought it was the wind, but nope. They’re chewing and letting the wind finish the job. Smart little rodents.

I’m a bit worried for our local bald eagle family. 🦅 They have a long-standing nest in a tree and it’s not too far away from some of the dam work (is that a pun??)🤣. Last year they had a new family member taking flight too.

Question for any county or enviro people who may be on here - what can we do? Anything?

It would really really suck to see the beavers get to the tree that the eagle’s nest is in (for years now). Can we wrap the nest-tree in chicken wire or something? Maybe also the second tree not far from the nest (where the eagles watch and hunt from)?

Anyone out there know anything about this kind of thing?

Haven’t seen them around here but we have moose and deer, etc., sooo, there must be a few out there. Again, just a reminder to watch for the little arachnids in the forested areas and grasses around Long Island Lake.

Anyone here come across ticks in the area recently (recent years).

Tick season is here! Protect yourself and your pets by covering up. Wear long sleeves, long pants, light coloured clothing, tuck pants into socks, and make sure you use a bug spray with DEET or Icaridin. Remember to always check yourself and your four-legged pals for ticks after leaving a grassy or wooded area.

⚠️ A reminder to be aware of bear warnings and closures as we head into hiking season. Bears are emerging from their dens and frequenting the valley bottoms in our mountain regions. Hikers should exercise extra caution at this time and give bears plenty of space.

Expect to encounter bears and be prepared to:
🐻 Make noise and travel in groups
🐻 Be vigilant and look for signs of bears (berries and s**t)
🐻 Keep all pets on a leash
🐻 Carry bear spray where it’s accessible and know how and when to use it
🐻 If you see a bear: stop, speak calmly, and slowly leave the area - give them plenty of space

Holy 💩. 🤬 Close call, Alberta! This guy trucked this across 3 provinces without getting caught, until AB.

It takes no time for these little mussels to invade and take over a lake. The last thing we need is this stuff infesting a gorgeous Alberta lake.

Please, please check your boats if they’ve been in another water body and you bring them to Long Island.

Please check them before ANY Alberta lake sees them enter a new waterbody.

One mussel can become MILLIONS within just 6 months… a single female mussel can produce 1 MILLION eggs per year.

This Ontario wake boat could have wiped out an Alberta lake. Gross.

Thanks to the Pembina Drift Busters Snowmobile Club for taking care of the trails in the neighbourhood.

A reminder from the ASA below, as the season’s wrapping itself up (slowly, as evidenced by Wednesday’s snowfall! ❄️☃️)…

Is the 2025-2026 season now behind us?

Check your Alberta Snowmobile Trail Map App or http://asa.evtrails.com/ # to see which trails are still open. If the trail is red, it is closed for snowmobiling for the season!

Please respect trail closures. Many snowmobile trails are on terrain that should only be accessed during the winter months. April 15 is the date when some public land trails could see wheeled vehicles on the trail. All parties need to be aware of each other for safe riding.

While some ASA trails are now open to other types of OHVs, many trails are not. There are many variables unique to each club, like landowner permissions (farmers' fields) , trail terrain (muskeg, nature preserves, etc.), or accessing private property, where you could be trespassing when snowmobiling is done for the season.
If you are unsure of the access, contact the local Club, the province or the land owner with questions.

With that said, we wouldn't exist without the support of our members. So, thank you! Thank you to all ASA members, volunteers and landowners for an incredible season.
