WE TRAIN DIFFERENT.

A few weeks ago, I had a consultation with an athlete who could move some serious weight.

Strong squat.
Strong deadlift.
Big press.

But when we asked him to jump, sprint, move laterally and stabilize on one leg, something became pretty obvious:

There’s a difference between being strong and being athletic.

And especially after 40, I think that matters.

Don’t get me wrong. Strength is a huge priority. We want you strong.

But we also want you to be able to use that strength.

To produce force.
Absorb force.
Move quickly.
Balance.
Change direction.
Run.
Jump.
Get off the ground.
And have an engine that lets you keep going.

That’s why we train differently than most gyms.

Yes, we squat, deadlift, press and pull.

But we also box jump, step-up, swing kettlebells, clean, sn**ch, carry, sprint, row, bike and run.

We use unilateral movements. Dynamic movements. Different planes of motion. Different speeds and different energy systems.

Because life doesn’t happen sitting on a machine.

And as we get into our 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, I don’t think the goal should only be to preserve what we have.

I want us to stay capable.

Strong enough to lift something heavy.

Fit enough to climb a mountain.

Athletic enough to react when we trip.

Mobile enough to get on the floor and back up.

And conditioned enough to keep doing the sports and activities we love.

That’s what we’re training for.

Not bodybuilding. Not powerlifting. Not just cardio.

We’re training for the sport of life.

Stronger.
Fitter.
More athletic.
More capable.

For as long as possible.

A client asked me the other day:

“Hey Coach, you train pretty hard. What are you training for?”

It actually made me think for a second.

I’m not training for a competition.
I’m not training for a race.
I’m not chasing some big number in the gym.

Nope.

I’m training for the sport of life.

I’m getting closer to 60, and I quite enjoy feeling more like I’m 40—and still being able to do many of the things I did in my 20s and 30s.

To me, that makes the work worth it.

And here’s the thing...

I don’t spend my life in the gym, at least not training. LOL.

I train 3–5 times a week for about an hour because I want those few hours to make the other 160+ hours of my week better.

I want to mountain bike.
Snowboard.
Hike.
Travel.
Carry my own stuff.
Get up off the ground.

I want the energy and physical ability to say YES to life instead of wondering whether my body can handle it.

And one day, hopefully, I’ll be a grandpa.

I don’t want to just watch my grandkids do things.

I want to do those things WITH them.

That’s what I’m training for.

I’m doing what I can now to stay strong, fit, mobile and healthy, to age well and strong—and hopefully spend less of my later years dependent on medications or needing someone else to take care of me.

Will training guarantee any of that?

Of course not.

But I believe it improves my odds, and that’s enough reason for me to keep showing up.

So no, I’m not training for anything special.

I’m training so I can keep living my life on my terms for as long as possible.

Because I don’t just want to add years to my life.

I’m prioritizing adding LIFE to my years.

That’s my why.

You have a goal? Awesome.

HOW BADLY DO YOU WANT IT?

Wanting something is the beginning.

Maybe you want to lose 20 pounds.
Get stronger.
Have more energy.
Improve your health.
Feel good in your body again.

Those are great goals.

But eventually, wanting it isn’t enough.

The real question becomes:

What are you willing to do consistently to get there?

And just as importantly...

What are you willing to give up to protect that goal?

Maybe it’s a few drinks on the weekend.

Maybe it’s staying up too late.

Maybe it’s constantly skipping workouts because something else came up.

Maybe it’s the habits you already know aren’t helping you.

Goals require choices.

They require discipline.

And most importantly, they require repeated action long after the initial motivation wears off.

You don’t have to be perfect.

You don’t have to give up everything you enjoy.

But you do have to decide which choices matter more.

Because at some point:

WHEN IT MATTERS ENOUGH,
YOU STOP NEGOTIATING WITH YOURSELF.

You said you wanted it.

Now build the habits that prove it.

Most people start lifting because they want to look better.

Leaner. More toned. Stronger.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I still want to look good too.

But somewhere along the way, especially as you get into your 40s, 50s and beyond, you realize that building and maintaining muscle is about a whole lot more than what you see in the mirror.

What people think MUSCLE does:

Makes you look better.

Yep. It does.

What MUSCLE actually does:

💪 Helps improve insulin sensitivity
💪 Supports stronger bones
💪 Helps protect and support your joints
💪 Improves balance and stability
💪 Makes everyday life easier
💪 Helps you stay capable and independent
💪 Protects your ability to do the things you love as you age

That last one becomes a pretty big deal.

Because eventually strength isn’t just about how much you can lift.

It’s carrying your groceries.

Getting yourself off the floor.

Climbing the stairs.

Doing your own yard work.

Travelling.

Hiking, biking, skiing or golfing.

Keeping up with your kids and grandkids.

And hopefully being able to take care of yourself for a very long time.

Muscle isn’t just for looks.

It’s a retirement account for your body.

The work you put in now is something your future self gets to draw from later.

If you’re over 40 and want to age well, age strong and continue doing the things you love, building and maintaining muscle needs to become a priority.

And here’s the nice part...

Make health, strength and longevity the priority—and looking better can become one of the side effects.

Train for more than the mirror.

Train for your life.

Did you know?

Lifting weights may be one of the most powerful things you can do to fight the physical effects of aging.

Not because it only builds muscle.

Because it gives your muscles, bones, brain, metabolism, and connective tissues a reason to keep adapting.

As we age, muscle mass and strength naturally decline. Bone density can decrease. Everyday tasks can start to feel harder.

Resistance training helps push back against that.

It tells your body:

Keep this muscle.
Keep these bones strong.
Keep adapting.

For your muscles, strength training helps preserve lean mass and maintain strength.

For your bones, loading them through resistance training gives them a reason to stay strong and continue remodeling.

It also does more than that.

Working muscles release chemical signals that communicate with other tissues in the body, including the brain, and regular exercise supports circulation, metabolic health, and overall function.

Even your skin may benefit indirectly through improved circulation, metabolic health, and maintaining the structure underneath it.

But the bigger message is this:

Muscle is not just something you see in the mirror.

It is active tissue that supports how you move, how you age, and how well your body functions.

A good place to start?

Aim for resistance training 2–3 times per week.

Squat.
Hinge.
Press.
Row.
Carry.

Start where you are, learn to move well, and gradually build from there.

Because you’re not just building muscle for today.

You’re building physical reserve your body may need 10, 20, or 30 years from now.

That matters.

If you could preserve just one thing as you age — strength, bone density, brain function, or mobility — what would you choose?
