YEAR END PARTY

We were hoping to be celebrating a birth in the finals at the party but a few hours after a very disheartening loss in the semi final game I am thankful we were able to get together and heal as a team as we remember a fun season. Thankful for those in attendance as we ate some food, played some games, ran around in the woods and shared stories that put smiles on our faces. Thanks to Coach Matt who registered our team for the Esso awards and Coach Kevin who created his own fun “team” certificates too.

I want to thank the coaches, players and families for an exciting season.

Today our Tigers were on the road in Port Colborne as the home team to take on the Welland White 2 team in the Championship Weekend. The winner moves on to the NDHL Finals tomorrow afternoon. We have a full roster for the game. A good sized crowd in attendance to watch these two Welland teams play. First period sees a rather balanced attack from both teams as the teams feel each other out. The White team strikes first on the power play with a one timer out front. 12 seconds later we go down 2-0 after a backhand rebound goes in. We get called on another soft penalty late that we carry into the second period as the first ends 2-0 in their favour. Second period and we kill off the rest of the penalty and go back on the attack. Not many calls from the refs in our favour and the frustration is starting to mount. The White team makes it 3-0 with 13:55 to go. We begin to mount an offensive threat and we score as Liam gets the feed from Kingsley to make 3-1. The White answers back on a nice tip in and it’s 4-1. The refs are missing numerous calls against us when we get called again. We kill off that penalty but give up a softy seconds after the penalty expires. The White get yet another to make it a 6-1 game at the end of 2 periods. The missed calls, the injuries from those missed calls and obviously the score are making a comeback a hard task to overcome. We start the third period and the White is dialing up the shenanigans out there and the refs finally call an opposing penalty halfway through the period. Our bench is gassed and although we get some good scoring chances we are unable to capitalize with the man advantage. The White team again add insult to injury when they score again to make it 7-1. The White team goon it up moments later and a few players have had enough. The refs sort it out and we are on the power play but unable to mount an effort late. We played hard and could not overcome the calls and the White team’s top players made the difference. With that our season comes to an emotional end. Super proud of this team for their progress this season!

Tonight our Tigers were on the road to take on the Niagara Falls #3 Flyers. This is the last game of the round robin playoffs and our Tigers have already secured a spot in the Championship Weekend and unfortunately the Flyers are not moving on after a 0-5 showing in the playoffs to date. Still something to play for for us as a win puts us in the 3 spot and we would play the Welland 2 team and a loss would drop us to 4th and we would face Thorold. Our Tigers facing a very short bench and with Kaleb not able to go for the game (breaking his incredible iron man streak) Owyn steps between the pipes and shakes of the rust. Owyn played years ago as a goalie so hoping the rust falls off quickly tonight. No Kaleb, Liam, Tristan S and with Owyn in net we are down some offensive punch. First period and we are doing a great job owning their zone. The Flyer goalie appears to be struggling with rebound control so an opportunity for our Tigers to capitalize and drive the net.
Harper with a nice hustle creates a turnover that Eli picks up and finds the back of the net to make it 1-0 for our Tigers. Some solid chances but no more goals for either team the rest of the period and it’s 1-0 Tigers after one. Second period and with a few players playing their not so usual spots tonight we seem to be more comfortable and getting the puck on net more. The Flyers score on an innocent shot that Owyn tried to direct the rebound into the corner but the Flyer player was at the right place and right time to make 1-1. Late in the period Colton fires in a high shot from the point to make 2-1. Just 13 seconds later Harper is stopped at the side of the net, the puck goes behind the net where two players converge, the puck squirts up in the air and drops almost on to Harper’s stick in front of the net and boom, we lead 3-1. Period ends at 3-1. Third period and all our Tigers are working hard. A fairly back n forth period but Owyn has a couple huge saves to preserve tge 3-1 win. An extremely well played game where we all played hard from start to finish.

Our playoff record:
3-1-2

Last night our Tigers were home, though it was in the small youth arena as the away team, to take on the Welland #2 yellow team. Bit of a delay as we waited for the refs. Both teams itching to enter the ice. Once on the ice our Tigers look to have a spring in their skates as they looked determined and focussed during warmup. First period and we are flying out there. We looked dialed in and are getting pucks to the net. With a strong forecheck we are out shooting the yellow team. The yellow team score first on a misplayed rebound late in the period. Period ends 1-0 for the yellow team. Second period and finally as we are out playing the yellow team we are rewarded as Liam on a nice cut in hangs around for his own rebound to tie it at 1 a piece. Eli just under 2 minutes later picks up a loose puck and heads in to their zone. Eli snaps a beauty under the crossbar and we take the lead 2-1. Under a minute later Liam throws the puck on net from the corner and the goalie misplays it, he puck is loose and sitting on the goal line when Joseph shovels it in. Now 3-1 in our favour Liam, who is hustling hard, gets the 4th goal for our Tigers and it’s quickly 4-1 with 8:22 to go in the second. The yellow team is trying to press but we are not backing down. A blocked point shot springs a yellow team player that scores on the breakaway and the period ends 4-2 in our favour. Third period and we need to keep pushing the play in their end but we seem to be trying to not let them score. We give up a goal and now it’s a one goal lead. The team is still positive and we got this. We just need to stay on the attack and get pucks to the net. All said we had good puck control time in their zone in the third but manage only a shot or two. The yellow team playing with desperation in the third again take advantage of our apparent protective play and now with 2:25 to go we are tied at 4. Both teams trade shots but no real chances for the remainder of the game as the game in ends in a 4 all tie. With that single point we officially punch our ticket through the round robin to Championship Weekend!

Yesterday our Tigers were home to take on the Thorold Blackhawks. Both teams head in with undefeated records in the round robin playoffs. Our Tigers playing with a full roster for the 3rd time all year again. First period and we are taking it to the Hawks. A relentless forecheck leads to a Harper rebound goal 3:20 in. Owyn makes it 2-0 1:16 later. Thorold are pressing our defence which creates an odd rush that Thorold capitalize on. We continue to be the attacker but give up a breakaway late that Kaleb shuts the door on. The period ends 2-1. Second period and Thorold continues to press our defence in their zone catching our wingers playing too low which creates some quality scoring chances for the Hawks. The refs are getting whistle happy and the game is getting rough. Thorold are able to net 4 goals in the period. Our Tigers are reeling and the frustration is mounting. Third period sees the refs put the whistles away and the play is getting aggressive. Thorold using their size to their advantage and our Tigers are not getting pucks to the net enough. We are getting pucks deep but consistently losing the puck down low as opposed to driving the net. Thorold is able to score 3 more to make it an 8-2 final. Not our best game by far but this loss is a nice reminder we need to bring our game and play our game every game.

Today our Tigers were at home to take on the Niagara Falls 4 Flyers. First period and we are taking it to the Flyers. Strong attacking forecheck and our defense is keeping their heads up and passing the puck well. The time of possession is heavily in our favour but the Flyer goalie is big and playing well. The period ends with no scoring. Second period and we continue to push the play. The Flyers are starting to show some frustration and taking some penalties. We are unable to capitalize after the first two power plays. The Flyers score first on a nice feed across that Kaleb had no chance at. The Flyers give Owyn a shove into their own goalie in front of their net which leads to another power play. A near goal on a nice cross ice one timer but chance after chance we just can’t get it past the Flyer keeper. Glad forward to a Kingsley feed across that Landon is Johnny on the Spot and we are tied at 1. 1-1 after two periods and we are out working and out shooting the Flyers. Noah clears it up to Jacob who chips it up and Eli turns on the jets, breaks in to the net around the defender and slips in the back handler to give us a 2-1 lead. A stellar goal by Eli. A few minutes later Colton fires in a point shot that is tipped in but wait… the refs call it a high stick so, no goal. The Flyers change up the strategy by hanging a player deep as a cherry picker hoping to catch us off guard. We call a timeout with 2:01 remaining to set up our final defence. Get pucks deep and keep it deep is the game plan. A missed pass causes an icing and a subsequent faceoff in our zone. The Flyers pull the goalie to get an advantage but we do not let up and after some hard digging by Owyn and Jacob Kingsley has the puck on his stick and into the gaping net. 3-1 final for our Tigers who played a great complete game.

Last night our Tigers were at home to take on the Pelham 2 Panthers. The first period sees our Tigers controlling the tone and getting the puck deep in the Panthers zone and attacking on the forecheck. The Panthers goalie is giving up rebounds and we need to capitalize. Pelham gets called on 2 instances in the same play and we go on a 5 on 3 power play. Nathan gets a shot on net from the point, Owyn grabs the rebound and slides it over to Landon who slams the puck in to the open side. Tigers lead 1-0. Shortly after still on the power play Tristan C picks up the puck in our zone off an attempted dump in and catches the Panthers on a line change. Tristan C skates into the zone on a 2 on 1 and fires the puck into the net beating the goalie. Tigers lead 2-0 and the period ends at that. Second period and our Tigers continue to apply the pressure in the offensive zone. Liam bangs one home early in the period off the scramble in front to make it 3-0 for our Tigers. The bench is having a far too relaxed feel and our coaches try to keep the team focussed. Pelham get on the board late in the period off a nice shot. Period ends and we maintain a 3-1 lead. Our Tigers seem to want to sit back and relax a little but we need to press the play. The Panthers adjust their offense by placing a deep cherry picker at our blue line. We are getting some great chances in front but unable to find the handle. Pelham hits the cherry picker and he breaks in on the breakaway but Kaleb says not this time. Pelham call a timeout with 3:49 remaining. Our Tigers get it deep but ease off the pedal and Pelham utilizes that cherry picker again except Kaleb is unable to stop it and the game is 3-2 with 3:31 to go. A tense tone as we just need to get the puck in their zone keep it there. Tristan C gets called for body checking with 2:52 left and Pelham take advantage on the power play to tie it at 3 with 1:20 to go. We are able to mount a good rush but again off the scramble are just not able to find the puck. Off the scramble with only seconds left Pelham try to hit the cherry picker for the breakaway but thankfully the buzzer goes. A tie 3-3 is the final score. Hopefully a few lessons learned as we continue through the playoffs. We are playing very well the last 4 games and when we keep our foot on the gas we are hard to stop and can’t afford to ease up.

TOURNAMENT
Stoney Creek Winterfest

Game 4 - Semi Finals:

Our Tigers who earned the 3rd seed are the away team as we face the 2nd seed Stoney Creek 1 Warriors. This is a rematch of last night when we faced these Warriors and came out on the losing side of a well played game. The 9:00am game is played at the Valley Park arena which is a step up from the other 2 arenas we have played at for this tournament. First period and we came to skate as we are moving the puck very well and it is a very even back and forth start. The Warriors score first off a bad angle snipe that goes off Kaleb’s face mask and skims the top netting and out, it was a nice shot. We are getting our chances as the SC goalie is giving up rebounds but we just can’t close on it. The Warriors score again on a nice feed across to make it a 2-0 game but our bench is determined to not give up. Liam gets us on the board on a near breakaway that he was hooked from behind and did not get the call but was able to slide it in five hole nonetheless. Jacob off the ensuing faceoff with a great individual effort drives up the middle puts a backhand on net and scoops up the rebound on the forehand to slam it home and this game is tied at 2 goals a piece. We score back to back 13 seconds apart with just under 2 minutes to go in the first. Period ends all knotted up 2-2. Second period and just 17 seconds in we give a goal on a scramble to make it 3-2 for SC. Our bench again is not down but determined. Just 45 seconds later Eli tips in a point shot from Tristan C and again we are tied. Some good opportunities on both sides and SC even hit the crossbar twice but after 2 periods we are all even at 3-3. Third period and both teams are playing hard, a very clean game on both sides. Good pressure from both teams but the Warriors get a 3 on 1 and tic tac goal. With 5:35 to go we are down 4-3. Tristan C called after the goal which puts us down for the next 2 minutes. We are able to kill it off but unable to push forward. At full strength we are hard in their zone and able to draw a penalty with 2:47 remaining. Setting up for a final push we take a timeout with 1:59 to go. With 4 forwards and 1 defence we are set to pull the goalie and get a 5 forward 1 defence rush versus the 4 Warriors. We get a great push and a mad scramble at the net but just cannot find the handle. The puck comes out and a foot race ensues where the SC player gets off a mid ice backhander that finds our open net with 0:11 left. Final score is 5-3. What a great game!
