Tonight our Tigers got together to send off the year. The boys did a little 5 pin bowling and the smiles tell it all. I can’t thank the players, families and my fellow coaches enough for the season we had. Thank you to all who made it out tonight!

Last night our Tigers were on the road in the new Walker Sports and Abilities Center to take on the Thorold Blackhawks #2. Needing a win to control our destiny in the round robin playoffs as this is our last game of the round robin. If we lose we still may tie forcing a play in game but definitely want to control our own path. The rink is larger than most we play on so should be some open ice for the game. We come out flying with a relentless forecheck. Some good chances but the Thorold goalie is standing strong. Max slides in a beauty that bounces off the bottom back of the net. The Thorold team looks dejected, our bench and fans erupt, but wait… the refs say “play on”??? They apparently did not see it go in!! That caused a stir on the bench but we gather ourselves and push on. The first period ends tied at 0-0. We are clearly the harder working team and our team is getting frustrated with the officiating. Second period and the officials are making a mockery of this game as they call a slew of penalties, miss a number of cheap shots, screw up several icing calls, yelling at our assistant coach to shut up as he asked a question politely and Thorold takes advantage of our frustration by scoring 4 goals in the period. Now down 4-0 after 2 periods our players are dejected but with all this happening do settle down and push on. Third period and we are pressing the play but unable to beat the Thorold goalie. The refs intervene yet again calling penalties on some ghost plays, missing some blatant calls but yet we play on and feeling like we cannot dig out of a hole Thorold get another to make it 5-0. Max breaks the shutout to make it 5-1, then Jayden gets one from the point 2:40 later to make it 5-2. Can we dig out?? Not if the refs have anything to say about it as a Thorold player drives ours into the boards in a blatant boarding call, the ref calls 2 of our players for roughing.the Thorold player is so mad for getting a 2 min minor he slams the door and as opposed to giving the player an additional 2 min misconduct they T him up with a 10 min misconduct which means Thorold is still on the power play. So we get hit into the boards, they have a temper tantrum and we are on the penalty kill. One of the most frustrating games where the refs ruined what should have been a great game. We take the loss 6-2 and need the yellow Welland team to win against the red Thorold team who play immediately after our game on the same rink. Several of our team stay to watch the yellow team, who are without a few of their top players, lose 2-0. Our loss and the yellow team’s loss combined mean we are not moving on. What a shame our season had to end with such a horrific game.

Our playoff record ends at:
1-4-0

Our overall record this season:

Last night our Tigers were home as the away team to take on the White Welland Tigers. Our Tigers come out and are doing a great job of taking it to them. The team looks very inspired and the forecheck is relentless. Our Tigers capitalize on a shot where Tristan stepped into one from the point and our Tigers lead 1-0. Welland answers back when a bad bounce in front goes right to their player and into our net. We outworked them and out chances them the first period but period ends tied at one. Second period and our players are showing frustration from doing all the right things but not seeing the goals and Welland gets a similar bad bounce goal to make it 2-1. A back and forth period when Welland get another on a breakaway to make it 3-1. Third period and the players need a pick me up as the game is not out of hand at 3-1. The effort seems flat to start the period and Welland get 2 goals 2 minutes apart to make it 5-1 and with 8:03 remaining our boys are hanging their heads with no answers despite outshooting the Welland team. The next few minutes of the period sees Welland playing a keep away game almost toying with us until we establish their zone and Jayden snaps one in from the point through the screen and makes it 5-2 with 1:32 to go. We give a final push but the game ends in a 5-2 loss. This was a tough one as we were the harder working team for most of the game but seemed to have checked out early. Hoping we can recoup as we are not out of the playoffs yet and we play our final round robin playoff game, hopefully not the last of the season, tonight in Thorold.

Tonight our Tigers were home to take on the Thorold Blackhawks #1. Our Tigers come out and are doing a good job of taking it to Thorold. The forecheck is relentless which allows Eli to get us on the board and Joseph to give us a 2 goal lead. Thorold answers back with 3 goals of their own in a span of 1:05. First period ends with our Tigers down 3-2. Second period and Max makes it a 3 all game. Thorold is doing a good job of crashing our net and they get 3 unanswered goals that makes it 5-3. Ryker jams one in to make it 5-4 and Nathan fires one in from the point for his first of the year to tie it at 5-5. Second period ends at 5 all with us being out worked in the second. Third period and it comes down to a 15 min game where we are back out working the Blackhawks but not able to score. Mad scramble in front of our net and Kaleb gets caught but Max dives across the goal line preventing Thorold from jamming it in. Thorold again crashing the net and a defensive breakdown allows Thorold to bang in the rebound and take a 6-5 lead with 3:16 to go. We give it our best but the game ends as a 6-5 loss.

Today our Tigers were home to take on the Niagara Falls Flyers #3. Coming off a great come from behind win our Tigers look to come out strong against the Flyers. Our Tigers get on the board first when Colton fires one in from the point through the screen. The Flyers crash the net and tie it up 30 seconds later. We are losing the little battles which leads to the Flyers getting 2 more goals. With 4:40 remains and down 3-1 our Tigers are feeling the frustration and that is starting to show on the bench. The Flyers get another to end the first and we are down 4-1 after the opening period. We have been here before… and need to hit the reset button and believe in each other. A few missed calls against us and the attitude is negative, as we need a spark. Max does just that as he snaps in a beauty to make it 4-2. The bench still doesn’t seem to believe. The period is drawing close when Max gets credit for a scramble in front that makes it over the goal line with 1.5 seconds remaining. Second period ends 4-3. Being down one goal and the team looks defeated even after the 2 goals. Third period and trying to instill some confidence as our Tigers are taking it to the Flyers. Max beats the goalie but puts it off the post. The Flyers get a lucky break as a shot is blocked creating a breakaway that makes it 5-3. The Flyers get another to make it 6-4. We pull the goalie but unable to change the score as we fall to a final score of 6-4. We be played well but struggled to keep the focus. With a practice tomorrow we look to reset the focus for a night game Monday.

Today our Tigers were the away team at home against the Welland gold team to kickoff the playoffs. Our Tigers have been playing good hockey this past little stretch but just coming up short so hoping we can have a clean slate with playoffs and make a run. The game starts and we are taking it right to the gold team. The good team got their first shot on net until almost 3mins into the game. We are out working them, out shooting them and out chancing them but…. wouldn’t you know they score first on a scramble in front. Then again 2 mins later. First period ends with us down 2-0. Second period and Ryker gets us on the board to make it 2-1. We give up back to back goals to make it 4-1. We are the harder working team and again not seeing the pay off but these kids do not get down and push on. We get back to back goals from Jacob and Cody on the same shift to make it 4-3, we are in this. A bad giveaway makes it a 5-3 game but again we battle and get 2 goals late from Max to tie it up at 5-5 after two periods. Final period and we deserve this win. We continue to win the little battles but give up a goal to make it 6-5 with 7:32 remaining. We keep pushing on and boom, Owen jams one home to tie the game at 6 a piece. Max snaps one high short side for the hat trick to take the lead with 7:08 to go. The good team call a time out with 2:40 remaining. Everything we got boys let’s go get this… we struggle to get the puck deep in their zone until finally Eli snaps one top shelf where mama keeps the cookies and we have a 2 goal lead with 1:10 to go. Ensuing faceoff goes deep in our zone and they pull the goalie where Max caps off the game with an empty netter at the 12 second mark and shake the monkey off our back our Tigers played a great game where they deserved the win and darn well got it!

Today our Tigers were home to wrap up the regular season against the Niagara on the Lake Wolves. When we last met at the end of November we took the 2-1 victory in NOTL. Our Tigers have been playing inspired hockey but just not seeing the benefits of their efforts lately, so ending the season with a W was the task at hand. First period starts with the Wolves having the slight edge until Teo opens the scoring. We are forechecking well and taking it to the Wolves. The Wolves tie up the game and the period ends 1-1. Second period sees the Wolves start crowding the net and they capitalize to make it a 2-1 game. Our Tigers are starting to show some frustration on the bench themselves. Ryker snaps in a tying goal with 1.9 seconds remaining to end the second all tied at 2. Third period and we have momentum heading in and need to control our emotions. NOTL get a go ahead goal when they crash the net and somehow the puck apparently crossed the line just 42 seconds in. A minute 19 later on a deep dump in from center the puck takes a weird bounce and Kaleb wants that one back. Shell shocked our Tigers lose the ensuing faceoff and the Wolves March in to score. With 3 goals in the first 2:14 of the period now 5-2 our Tigers need to snap out of it and get one back. Max takes one end to end to get the score to 5-3. The Wolves score 2 more back to back and our Tigers manage another until NOTL slides in another. Final score was 8-4 as we give up 6 goals in the third. An emotional loss that our Tigers will have to shake off heading into the playoffs. This team deserves a win and will hopefully find it as the playoffs start.

Tonight our Tigers were on the road in Port Colborne to take on the first place Port Colborne Sailors. With 2 games in the regular season left our Tigers are playing well but not getting the result. First period and we look to be under siege. We did not get the puck into their zone in the first 2:15. After each lines first shift we seemed to settle in a bit and Max got a bounce that he turned into a breakaway that he scores on to make it 1-0 for our Tigers. Kaleb is standing strong in net and the first period closes with us maintaining the 1-0 lead in a game that is getting rough from the Sailors. Second period and the roughness continues with some calls being made and our Tigers are getting frustrated. Port scores to tie it up at 1 all with 11:03 remaining. The frustration gets the best of us and we get called for a push which Port capitalized on to take the 2-1 lead with 2:42 to go. The second period comes to a close with it being a one goal game. Try to settle everyone down and focus on the play and not the refs was the theme to start the third. We come out strong but unable to score. Port gets a terrible goal as the late whistle allows the Sailors to jam the covered puck into the net to give the Sailors a 3-1 lead with only 5:27 to go. That seemed to be the last gasp of air we had as we push hard and try our best but with 1:28 to go, a bad angle shot goes in to make it a 4-1 final. We hung with the top team in the league right to the end but we just couldn’t get there. Great effort again as our Tigers are playing well but not able to seal the deal.

Yesterday our Tigers were home to take on the Niagara Falls Flyers #1. Our first game since the Bradford tourney where we played some of the more inspired hockey all season and looking to continue that play into the regular season. With only a few games remaining in the regular season before the playoffs, our Tigers look poised to put in a good run. The first period see our Tigers come out with a ferocious, forecheck and generating some good chances. The Flyers goalie is standing strong as we are unable to find the back of the net. Kaleb who has been battling illness all week is doing a good job of keeping us in the game until the Flyers bang one in from in front to open the scoring and make it 1-0 Niagara Falls. The Flyers get a second one in similar fashion to the first goal with 3:07 remaining in the first. We are out working them, had more shots and more chances but after one period we are down 2-0. Second period is a back n forth affair but we still hold the edge on shots, chances and time if possession but neither team can capitalize. Third period and our players are frustrated by the lack of results from their efforts but we pull it together and push on. Third period and we are getting more shots but not of high quality. We are not giving up many high quality chances either until the Flyer player with 3 of our players draped all over him slides a softy in to make it a 3-0 lead. Very frustrating as we are playing the better game. Max gets an unassisted goal to make it 3-1 with 5:26 to go. We pull Kaleb with a minute to go. The ref whistles the play dead trying to call us for 6 skaters being too many men but hey, we pulled the goalie… LOL. Play resumes but no avail as the score again does not reflect the effort these boys put forth tonight as our Tigers turned in a good game that unfortunately did not go our way.
