Great weekend of training with our crew from Sault Ste. Marie who joined us for an intensive deep dive into Koto Ryū and Gyokko Ryū.

A big thank you to Zack and Pat for making the trip and showing up with real intention, openness, and a willingness to learn. That mindset is what keeps these traditions alive and evolving.

Looking forward to the next time we’re all on the mats together.

A few more moments from last night’s training

Putting ground fighting tactics and disengagement strategies into action under the guidance of Sensei Kenitz. These snapshots highlight why it’s so important to explore and pressure-test these techniques alongside our traditional martial arts training, building a base that’s not just strong, but truly complete and adaptable.

Great work all around.

Great energy at last night’s class! Sensei Kenitz led students through ground fighting tactics and smart disengagement strategies. Exploring these skills alongside our traditional martial arts techniques is key to building a strong, well-rounded, and truly grounded foundation.

Some photos and clips from training this week at the dojo.

For the first few months of this year, our focus has been a back-to-basics approach, spending a lot of time drilling Kihon and Kaiten, and working on fundamental taijutsu and conditioning.

Kihon is the foundation of everything we do at the Mugen Dojo. These fundamental movements are where structure, balance, timing, and control are developed. It’s not flashy work, but it is where skills are polished, sharpened, and refined over time.

No matter how many years someone has trained, we always return to the basics. That’s where real progress happens.

A segment of an old HTYR test video from 2006 at the old Mugen Dojo, with that unmistakable feeling of those days.

Another pattern from Takagi Yoshin Ryu — entering off the line, controlling the wrist, striking to create imbalance, and finishing with a takedown through coordinated kuzushi and timing.

Shime waza into sutemi waza
From shizen no kamae into kumi uchi, applying hon jime with proper entry and control, followed by a committed sutemi waza for the throw. Technique, balance, and timing over strength.

And yes — sincere appreciation to the crash mat for protecting our uke, while tradition meets gravity 🙏😄

Technique first. Safety always. Mutual respect in every practice.
