Dear Friends,

Last week, an article was published in the Cambridge Times regarding a School Trustee's request to have Naloxone in every first aid kit of every school in Waterloo Region. Here is a link to the article:

https://www.cambridgetimes.ca/news-story/7565212-make-naloxone-kits-available-in-schools-says-cambridge-trustee/

I need your help to write to every School Trustee (both public and separate) to support Cindy Watson to make this happen.
Here is my email. Please edit your email to personalize it:

Dear Trustees,

This email is in response to an article in the Cambridge Times regarding the availability of Naloxone in schools.

I personally feel very strongly that Naloxone kits should be in every school in Waterloo Region. I have a Naloxone kit in my home. I hope to never have to use it, but I have it as a safety measure in the unlikely event that someone in my home or neighbourhood overdoses. I, like hundreds of other members of our community have been trained on the proper administration of this drug. I know that this drug is harmless if accidentally administered to someone who is not overdosing. If my children were still in school, i would want to know that the school had Naloxone as part of their first aid kit.

I lost my 17 year old son Austin in 2013 to an accidental drug poisoning. Had Naloxone been as widely available as it is today, Austin may very well be alive.

I am now an advocate for Harm Reduction and Overdose Awareness Training in our schools. I have been facilitating a 70 minute program, along with a public health nurse, to grades 9 and 12 students at EDSS for four years. We have also presented the program to Education Assistants, the alternative education schools, School of Pharmacy, the Committee of Youth Officers Conference, etc.

This education session, along with Naloxone should be in our schools immediately.

Thank you.

Christine Padaric

Tonight I was invited to Jacob Hespeler High School to present at their Drug Info Night for Parents. As promised to those in attendance, below is a link to my powerpoint presentation - minus my pictures and images as they made the file too large :(

Thank you to everyone who attended and to those brave parents who came out and spoke to me after the event. It's a difficult conversation but one that is relevant and timely as we currently face approximately 2 overdoses per day in Waterloo Region.

Be safe.

Many of us - Moms, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, Friends - we have been waiting for this Bill to be passed for a long time. Never turn a blind eye on a person overdosing. Let's spread the word that it is OK to call 911 in an overdose situation. You will save your friend's life and you will not be arrested for doing the right thing.

Have you lost someone to overdose? Please consider adding them to the Overdose Map of North America to highlight this crisis. http://arcg.is/29EQFe5

The rise in deaths due to prescription drugs and he**in is alarming. Often times society may have a perception of who this is. The fact is they are everyday people we love, everywhere. Click the

I have to thank MPP Ron Mckinnon and his Assistant Chris Lalande for finding me and encouraging me to get involved and help get this very important Bill passed. For more info on Bill C-224 click the following link: https://openparliament.ca/bills/42-1/C-224/

It isn't law yet, but there seems to be no opposition and just a couple more hurdles to go. We need to start thinking about how this change should be communicated to the public. Education will be another challenge.

This Bill WILL save lives. Call 911 during an overdose emergency - regardless whether you have Naloxone or not. Naloxone is meant as a bridge to keep you alive until medical assistance arrives and can get you to hospital.

The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act may have helped so many kids from an untimely deaths. I am thinking of Austin tonight - who's mother Christine Padaric who advocates on behalf of harm reduction.

Bill C-224 cleared the Senate today with awesome amendments, but is not yet law. It will hit the House of Commons soon. Share or like this post please.

This enactment amends the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in order to exempt from charges for possession a person who seeks emergency medical or law enforcement assistance for themselves or another person following overdosing on a controlled substance.

It's so powerful when someone who has lived experience with addiction has the bravery to come forward and share their story of hope. Addiction can be beaten. It truly is about communication and having safe, trusting relationships in order to come forward and seek help from others.

I'm looking forward to presenting in Ottawa this Thursday to the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs as Bill C-224 An Act to Amend the Controlled Substances Act (aka Good Samaritans Overdose Act) goes before the Senate Committee. We are so close to seeing this Private Member Bill get passed.

This important Bill will provide immunity to those who call 911 in an overdose emergency. This amendment WILL save lives. Watch it live February 9th at 10:30 am EST.
