🌌 The Garlic Head Nebula
LBN 576 – Abell 85 / CTB 1 (supernova remnant, Hα + OIII)
LBN 576, also known as Abell 85 and CTB 1, is an extremely faint supernova remnant located about 10,000 light‑years away in the constellation Cassiopeia.
It is a very diffuse nebula, difficult to capture, requiring a large amount of signal to reveal its delicate filaments and expanding structures.
⭐ Why LBN 576 is a fascinating target
• A supernova remnant tens of thousands of years old
• A very large shell‑like structure with extremely low surface brightness
• Delicate Hα and OIII filaments revealing shock fronts from the expanding wave
• A demanding target, perfect for testing the sensitivity of bi‑band filters
• Highly photogenic when its subtle details are successfully extracted
🔥 Filter used: IDAS NBZ (Hα + OIII)
The entire acquisition was done with the IDAS NBZ filter, a bi‑band filter highly effective for:
• isolating Hα and OIII emissions from the remnant
• increasing contrast in faint filaments
• reducing the impact of high‑altitude atmospheric haze
• revealing the characteristic circular structure of SNRs
The NBZ performs exceptionally well on diffuse nebulae like CTB 1.
📅 Acquisition – four nights of imaging
📅 August 10, 14, 19, and 20
🌡️ Temperature: ~15 °C, comfortable
✨ Seeing: medium to good, variable
🌌 Transparency: good, with occasional high‑altitude thin clouds
🎥 Sensor cooling: –10 °C
📸 Frames captured: 260 × 300 s
📸 Frames kept: 243
⏱️ Total integration: 243 × 300 s = 20 h 15 min
This long exposure reveals:
• the Hα and OIII filaments of the remnant
• the very extended circular structure of CTB 1
• internal shock zones
• faint details normally invisible under average skies
• a clean image despite atmospheric haze
