Archie MacKinnon (1937-2026)

It is with great sadness that Rowing Canada Aviron mourns the passing of Archibald “Archie” MacKinnon, an Olympic champion, two-time Olympic medalist, and enduring figure in Canadian rowing history. Archie was also the last surviving member of the legendary “Cinderella Four,” the UBC crew that captured Canada’s first Olympic gold medal in rowing.
 
Archie MacKinnon represented the very best of Canadian rowing: determination, humility, teamwork and a belief in what can be achieved when individuals come together with a shared purpose. From an unlikely beginning in Cranbrook, to the highest podium in world sport, his journey remains an inspiration to generations of Canadian rowers.

RCA extends its deepest condolences to Archie’s wife Judy, their family, friends, teammates, and the many members of the Canadian rowing community who were fortunate to know him.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) pleure le décès d’Archibald « Archie » MacKinnon, un champion olympique, un athlète qui a remporté deux médailles olympiques et une figure de proue dans les annales de l’aviron canadien. Archie était aussi le dernier membre survivant du légendaire « Cendrillon 4 », l’équipage de l’UBC qui a décroché la toute première médaille d’or olympique du Canada en Aviron.

Archie MacKinnon incarnait les plus belles qualités de l’aviron canadien: la détermination, l’humilité, le travail d’équipe et la conviction que tout est possible quand des personnes s’unissent et partagent un but commun. De ses improbables débuts à Cranbrook jusqu’au podium le plus prestigieux du monde du sport, son parcours représente une inspiration pour toutes les générations de rameurs canadiens.

RCA exprime ses sincères condoléances à l’épouse d’Archie, Judy, à leur famille et leurs amis, à ses coéquipiers ainsi qu’aux nombreux membres de la communauté de l’aviron canadien qui ont eu la chance de le connaître.

50 ans après les Jeux de Montréal ’76, la communauté de l’aviron s’est réunie au Bassin olympique pour rendre hommage aux athlètes, aux souvenirs et à l’héritage de ces Jeux qui ont marqué à jamais l’histoire de l’aviron. ❤️

After a stroke left Alison with weakness and limited movement on one side of her body, she wasn’t sure rowing was possible. With the right equipment, great coaching, and a supportive community, she found her way onto the water and discovered a sport she loves.

Point de vue : On trouve sa place en aviron, même quand on n’était pas sûr qu’il y en ait une pour soi. 💙
 
Après un AVC qui a laissé Alison affaiblie et avec une mobilité réduite d’un côté du corps, elle n’était pas sûre de pouvoir pratiquer l’aviron. Grâce à un équipement adapté, à un excellent encadrement et à une communauté solidaire, elle a pu se lancer sur l’eau et découvrir un sport qu’elle adore.

The Women’s Eight closed out the World Rowing Championships, placing 5th in the A-Final in a time of 6:00.26.
 
The boats are off the water and the racing is in the books - time to head back to Canada. 🍁 ✈️

Day 6 at the Senior World Championships

🇨🇦 Women’s Eight - raced their heat and punched their ticket to tomorrow’s A Final with a time of 6:10.07! 🔥
🇨🇦 Women’s Quad - 5th in the B Final with a time of 6:28.31, placing them 11th overall.
🇨🇦 Men’s Single - won the D Final in a time of 6:51.96, finishing 19th overall.

One final race to go. The Women’s Eight takes on the world in the A Final tomorrow, Sunday, on the final day of the World Championships.💪

The Women’s Double of Alizée Brien and Grace Vandenbroek wrapped up the A Final in 5th place, crossing the line with a time of 6:54.82. 👏
 
In the Men’s Single, Trevor Jones raced through the quarterfinal, placing 6th in 7:01.83 and moving on to tomorrow’s D Final.

🇨🇦 Rowing Canada Aviron is proud to support Kristen Kit in her run for the World Rowing Athletes’ Commission!

A two-time Olympian and Olympic champion, Kristen has represented Canada at the highest level for more than 15 years, earning Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 and silver in Paris 2024, as well as a Paralympic bronze medal in Rio 2016. She has also earned multiple international medals across Olympic and Para rowing.

From Olympic and Paralympic medals to years spent in the coxswain’s seat, Kristen knows what it means to listen, lead, and bring the voices of everyone in the boat forward.

“I love finding ways to amplify all of the people in my boat as I believe each person’s viewpoint and voice is important.”

Now, she’s putting that experience to work for athletes around the world - bringing experience from the WADA Athlete Council and Rowing Canada Aviron Athlete Council, and a commitment to keeping athletes at the centre of decision-making.

🗳️ Voting is open August 27–29 for accredited athletes at the World Rowing Championships. Voting takes place in person at the Athlete Park, where the dining hall is located.

And before the voting closes, you can cheer Kristen on as she races in the 🇨🇦 Women’s Eight at Worlds Championships!

We’ve reached the midpoint of the Senior World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam 🇨🇦🇳🇱
 
The men’s four of Samuel Stewart, Ryan Clegg, Axel Ewashko, and Steven Rosts closed out their World Rowing Championships with a 1st place finish in the
C-final, crossing the line in 6:07.21 to finish 13th overall.
 
The women’s quad of Katie Clark, Kristen Siermachesky, Marilou Duvernay Tardif, and Shaye De Paiva placed 6th in the semifinal with a time of 6:36.54, advancing to the B final on Saturday.
 
Team Canada will be back on the water tomorrow, August 28:
🗓️ Men’s Single — Quarterfinal 3 | 4:37am PT / 7:37am ET / 1:37pm Local Time
🗓️ Women’s Double — A Final | 8:38am PT / 11:38am ET / 5:38pm Local Time
