PSA: Skydiving Gear Scams Are on the Rise

We’ve been seeing more scammers showing up in Facebook groups and classified pages, trying to sell gear that either doesn’t exist or isn’t what they claim. Unfortunately, people are still getting taken.

Here are a few simple ways to protect yourself when buying gear online:

-Call the seller’s dropzone or ask for a trusted reference. A quick phone call can make all the difference

-Use a reputable rigger as a third party. Have the gear sent to them for inspection before you send payment

-Use protected payment methods. PayPal (with buyer protection turned on) is a solid choice. Avoid e-transfers, crypto, or “friends and family” payments

-Ask for detailed photos or video. Look for DOM tags, serial numbers, and signs of wear. Do a search to see if the images appear elsewhere

-Do your homework. Search the seller’s name or email in scam watch groups. If something feels off, it probably is. Get a second opinion!

We all want to help gear find a new home — but no one wants to get ripped off in the process. Stay smart, ask around, and don’t be afraid to walk away if it doesn’t feel right.
