MAKE YOUR EXHALE LONGER THAN YOUR INHALE
Here is something you can use today, and it takes about a minute.
Breathe in through your nose for a count of four. Breathe out through your mouth for a count of eight. Do that six times.
That's it. The reason it works is that your heart rate rises slightly as you breathe in and falls as you breathe out. Make the out-breath longer than the in-breath and you tip the balance toward settling. It is one of the few things you can do consciously that reaches a system you otherwise have no direct control over.
We teach this in the first week of class, before anything that looks like fighting. A student who can steady themselves under pressure learns technique faster than one who can't, and they take that skill into a classroom, a job interview, or a difficult conversation at home.
Most martial arts hope calm turns up eventually. We teach it on purpose.
Fall classes start Tuesday, September 15 at the Masonic Hall. Registration Day is Sunday, September 13, 1 to 3 pm. more information at https://www.kenmarchtaler.com/karate-5
