❓If bowls is going to have a future, we have to build a culture people want to be part of.
Bowls clubs are about far more than what happens on the green…
👉The culture inside the clubhouse matters too👈
If we want bowls to grow, we need clubs where people feel welcomed, valued and included - not like they are entering an established circle where they have to earn their place.
• New members bring new energy.
• New bowlers bring new ideas.
• New generations bring the opportunity to create the next chapter of our sport.
That doesn’t mean abandoning the traditions that shaped our clubs…
Our long-standing members carry the history, memories and stories that make each club unique. That history matters.
But tradition should be a bridge to the future - not a barrier to it.
One day, today’s newcomers will be the experienced members. They’ll be the ones telling the stories, passing on the knowledge and welcoming the next generation.
But that future depends on what we create today.
SO WHAT SHOULD THE CULTURE OF A MODERN BOWLS CLUB LOOK LIKE?
✓ Less negativity.
✓ Less criticism and defensiveness.
✓ More openness.
✓ More encouragement.
✓ More people celebrating each other.
✓ Members supporting members.
✓ Experienced bowlers mentoring newcomers.
✓ Women lifting women.
✓ Young bowlers being given a genuine place at the table.
✓ Room for new ideas alongside valued traditions.
Growth isn’t just about getting more people through the gate - It’s about creating a club where they want to come back.
And ultimately: THE FUTURE OF BOWLS WILL BE SHAPED BY THE CULTURE WE CHOOSE TO CREATE TODAY.
