We had such a great turnout at this year’s Waterman Challenge, our annual kite/windsurf/SUP race and LWF fundraiser. We were pumped to see so many people, young and old, from our community come hang out on the yacht club deck and try their hand at SUPing or windsurfing. The winds were too light to run the kite-only and waterman races but we were able to conduct two nail-biting heats in the SUP race and also a slow and steady windsurfing race.
Some athletes generously gave a few free lessons in the different disciplines to some interested participants. This inspired organizers to add a kiteboard, windsurf and/or SUP lesson portion to next year’s event for anyone wanting to give these sports a try.
Athletes patiently waiting for better wind conditions ended up creating the demonstration sport of windsurf jousting, which will be officially be introduced at the 2022 games.
Wind or no wind, it’s always a fun day on the water with friends. So many of us use Lake Winnipeg for sport and recreation. We recognize the importance of preserving its health. Waterman Athletes raised just under $1000 for the Lake Winnipeg Foundation so far. Donations are still being accepted.
Race results to follow, have a great rest of summer and keep an eye out for the Waterman event date and details next year!
