Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about community—what it truly means and how each of us can help make it stronger.
The next time you see a child on a hockey rink, a baseball diamond, a soccer field, or a dance stage, take a moment to look beyond the game.
Look beyond the scoreboard.
Look beyond the jersey.
Look beyond the smile on that child’s face.
Because every one of those moments exists because someone chose to care.
It might be the volunteer firefighter who spent part of Canada Day serving pancakes instead of celebrating with their own family.
It might be the coach who rushes from work to make practice.
The parent who organizes fundraisers.
The volunteer who quietly unlocks the arena, lines the field, sells raffle tickets, or cleans up long after everyone has gone home.
And it might be the local business owner who writes a sponsorship cheque instead of taking that money home to their own family.
The restaurant that sponsors a jersey.
The contractor who buys a tournament banner.
The bakery that donates treats.
The small business that quietly says, “We believe in our community.”
Those dollars don’t just buy jerseys.
They buy confidence.
They buy friendships.
They buy first goals, road trips, early mornings, championship dreams, and memories that children will carry for the rest of their lives.
When you choose to support a local business, you’re doing so much more than making a purchase.
You’re helping keep a little girl’s hockey dream alive.
You’re helping a young boy step onto a baseball diamond.
You’re helping a child discover confidence, belonging, teamwork, and the feeling of wearing their community’s name across their chest.
Community isn’t built by one person.
It’s built by hundreds of ordinary people who quietly choose to show up for someone else’s child.
So the next time you shop, shop local.
Not because it’s convenient.
Not because someone asked you to.
But because somewhere in your community, a child is chasing a dream… and someone you just supported helped make that possible.
Community is more than where we live.
It’s where we invest in one another.
It’s where we leave things better than we found them.
And perhaps the greatest gift we can give our children isn’t a championship…
It’s a community that believes they’re worth investing in.
