Back to Back Provost men’s basketball Champs!!
The weekend started with a 8am game on Saturday against Edmonton, we had a rough start to the weekend as our 3 bigs ran into car trouble on the way to Provost. Mark Livingstone stepped up and took the role of guarding their 6’8 monster post. It was nearly impossible to slow down their big man, but we were up by 2 going into the half. Thankfully our 3 big men showed up and were ready to play in the second half. Donovan and Tim Yaceyko were able to slow down the big man, and with Jackson Livingstone scoring 7 three pointers. We won the game 90-85.
Before our next game, we had 6 players enter the 3pt contest. It ended up being Carson and Jackson Livingstone in the final, yet again, Carson defended his 3pt crown !!!
Our second game started at 1pm against Elk Point. We started very slow, being down 17-8 after the first. Elk Point was dominating the whole quarter. The Grizzlies turned it around in the second quarter taking the league 25-21. Grizzlies never looked back after half and won 56-47 with Jackson scoring 25 and Carson chipping in with 15 points(4 threes).
After facing 2 great teams the first two games, the Grizzlies were tasked with playing St. Paul. The Grizzlies started with a run and gun style while playing great defence leading 22-7 after one. The second quarter was very similar to the first as we lead 37-17 after the first. St. Paul focused on trying to stop Jackson in the first half and let the rest of the grizzlies beat them. Jackson was able to slash and get everyone involved when doubled. The gameplan for the second half was to keep pushing. The 3rd quarter everyone got involved, 8 out of the 9 players scored and Carson was carving St. Paul’s defence with 6 assists and 4 alone to Andre Sommer for wide open layups. The grizzlies were up 58-37 going into the 4th. St. Paul started the 4th quarter by changing to a 2-3 zone and with experience and high IQ of all the grizzlies players the were able to pass the ball around and work as a team and bleed the clock ending the game with the final score 76-48.
Provost Tournament has been a tradition of the grizzlies for 13 years, the team has changed quite a bit since 2014 with only 3 players still playing from the 2014 tournament (Devon Pottle/Tim Yaceyko/Dave Mckimmon)
This years champs
Number 18: Andre Sommer, the man that can snipe from the 3pt line and is always in the right spot off the ball.
Number 33: Donavon Yaceyko, a big man that bully’s down low and play great defence. Also very critical on how his big bro plays.
Number 12: Mark Livingstone, Played unbelievable defence all weekend from guarding a 6’8 post to Elk Point’s best player.
Number 21: Tim Yaceyko, the all around big, from playing great defence, to shoot a high percentage from mid range, and a monster on the glass.
Number 7: Devon Pottle, While playing with a hurt shooting hand, was still a high energy player to get get the team going. Bringing high IQ and rebounding even with a hurt hand.
Number 10: Dave Mckimmon, another high IQ player than can guard any position and can make any pass. He wears down the opponent with physicality on the boards or on defence. A guy that anyone would want on thier team.
Number 4: Austin McDonald, he may look small but plays just as big as anyone on the team. Guarded the best wings on the opposing teams all weekend and very rarely allowed a basket.
Number .08: Shawn Bobryk, the best guy to have on your bench, super positive and always plays great defence and the best guy to play with.
Number 3: Jackson Livingstone, heart and soul of the Grizzlies. Can do it all, shoot anywhere on the court, slash with elite finishing ability and elite defence when needed.
Number 2: Carson Livingstone, The point God of the team. Usually when the team gets set into an offence, the offence runs through him. Averaging well over 10 assists a game. Also the best shooter on the team.
