Trying skiing or snowboarding for the first time can feel intimidating... but getting started is often much simpler than people think.

You do not need expensive gear, years of experience, or expert-level confidence to begin. Most people start with rented equipment, a beginner lesson, and a willingness to try something new!

Everyone on the mountain had a first day once.

Some of Canada’s ski culture was built at local hills where communities came together to create places for people to learn, gather, and experience winter close to home.

The ROC in Georgina, Ontario, is part of that story. Community ski areas like this have introduced generations of Canadians to skiing and snowboarding, helping make snow sports more accessible and welcoming along the way.

These smaller hills continue to play an important role in growing the sport. Creating opportunities for first runs, school trips, family outings, and lifelong winter memories.

Canada’s ski history was built from the ground up by passionate local communities, volunteers, and people who believed in making winter something to be shared.

Ski areas are stewards of the mountains, not just guests on them.

On World Environment Day, we want to recognize the ongoing work happening across Canada to reduce impact and strengthen resilience. From conservation initiatives and habitat protection to energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, and smarter snowmaking practices, many ski areas are investing in solutions that support both the landscape and the local economy that depends on it.

This is not a one-day conversation. It is long-term stewardship, built season by season, with practical steps and shared learning.

Sometimes skiing and snowboarding are about chasing powder or perfect turns. Other times, it’s just about being outside, seeing the mountain again, and sharing the experience with people you enjoy being around.

That’s part of what makes snow sports so special in Canada, winter looks different for everyone, and there’s no single “right” way to enjoy it.
