Quiz Bowl is a high-energy game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions that encompass all areas of knowledge. These areas include literature, science, history, fine arts, mathematics, current events, sports, and pop culture. This game is perfect for all who enjoy Reach for the Top, Trivial Pursuit, and Jeopardy. First established in 2003, UBC Quiz Bowl participated in a variet
y of tournaments throughout the years. 2005 was the peak of its success, where the team placed 19th at the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament. At the time, that placement was the best performance of any Canadian team thus far. In the years that followed, the team began to dissolve due to key members graduating. By 2008, the team and club no longer existed. Today, UBC Quiz Bowl has been rejuvenated by a group of bright and eager students who wish to surpass the former glory of the club. Basic Quizbowl Rules:
The game requires a buzzer system that allows players to interrupt questions once they know the answer. This adds an element of speed, rapid recall, and anticipation to the game. However, interrupting a question and answering incorrectly will garner a 5 point penalty. "Tossups" are questions that typically contain clues beginning from the most obscure to the most simple information regarding the answer. These questions are answered individually and if answered correctly by a member of the team, allows the team to hear the bonus questions. Bonus questions are significantly shorter and can be answered as a team. Only the team that correctly answers the tossup is allowed to attempt the bonuses.
