Congratulations to Marina Downs for being selected as the recipient of Swim BC’s Volunteer Contribution Award!

Representing TBSC, Marina has been a true pillar of northern BC swimming for more than a decade. Whether serving as Meet Manager, Vice Chair, or stepping in to support club administration, her initiative, positivity, and sustained commitment have helped keep regional swimming thriving while inspiring volunteers across the province.

Marina reflected on what it means to give back to a sport that has been part of her life since she was young:
“Thank you so much to Swim BC for this award - I’m humbled and grateful for the acknowledgment knowing how many amazing volunteers we have across the province.
Thank you to all the volunteers for all the work you do to make sure our athletes can have an excellent experience whether that be in their home clubs or at meets.
Swimming has been a part of my life since I was young and continues to be something that I’m passionate about dedicating my time to as a swim parent and volunteer.
I’m very honoured to be able to come full circle transitioning from athlete to volunteering and swimming as a master in the club that I started at.
To any new member that has a swimmer just starting, don’t be scared or overwhelmed to get involved – there are so many resources with SwimBC and people able to share their knowledge to support.

Thank you again for this acknowledgement!”

Congratulations, Marina, and thank you for everything you contribute to our swimming community!

Congratulations to Kierra Smith for being selected as Swim BC’s Masters Female Swimmer of the Year!

Representing the Okanagan Masters Swim Club, Kierra Smith made a huge splash at the BC Masters Championships! In the Women’s 30–34 200m Breaststroke (SCM), Kierra threw down a commanding time of 2:34.75, coming within 5.16% of the world record to earn the Masters Female Swimmer of the Year award.

Kierra shared what returning to swimming has meant to her:

“When I retired from swimming I thought my competing days were over. I ran a marathon, bought a yoga pass, and straightened my hair. Then I got pregnant, so I got back in the pool. Pure joy! The Okanagan Masters Swim Club welcomed me with open arms. After my baby arrived the water became a place that was so familiar and 100% mine, it carried me through postpartum more than I can say. When OMSC hosted provincials I felt like I wanted to race again. My family stepped up unconditionally to watch my baby while I trained, just like they stepped up in so many ways when I was chasing the Olympics. Thank you to Swim BC, to my OMSC family, and to my mom and dad for 22 years of support. I thought I’d left swimming behind but it was waiting for me the whole time.”

Congratulations, Kierra!
