Founded in 1943, the Chau Luen Athletic Club has hosted kung fu classes for decades. Using our performances to make a meaningful impact in the community is one of our top priorities, so we’re always honoured to perform for the generous donors at the Scotiabank Feast of Fortune Gala for the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation and Providence Health Care.

This glamourous event raised well over $2.5 million dollars that will go far in improving healthcare for thousands of people living in Metro Vancouver, and we were privileged to be invited to be a part of it for the third straight year.

We never forget our roots or our community involvement! In a tradition as old as time, we gave individual performances for the lovely seniors living at Chau Luen Tower. Though they often see us train as our practice area is a shared communal space, we always give them an opportunity to receive a personalized performance at their front door as part of our Lunar New Year festivities.

After performing for two of the society buildings that make up the five last names under the Chau Luen Society’s umbrella (Tam and Hui), we go floor-to-floor and door-to-door, performing a lion dance for every senior in the tower that signs up.

This event means so much to us as we get to connect and give thanks to the seniors who share their space with us and encourage us as we work hard to improve our lion dance and kung fu skills. We’re committed to our seniors, and to see them smile and cheer as we give them blessings for the coming year is always the most heartwarming experience.

We had an incredible time at CF Pacific Centre for our Year of the Horse performance! It’s always a special experience to bring both dragon and lion dance into the heart of downtown Vancouver, especially if it’s for a free performance that lets us connect with the community.

Beyond the main show, our favourite part was hitting the long list of Pacific Centre’s businesses for a traditional Choy Cheng blessing. Seeing the surprise and smiles on the faces of shoppers and shopowners was the icing on the cake.

A huge thank you to the team at Cadillac Fairview having us, and to everyone who stopped their shopping to cheer us on.

With the excitement and enthusiasm that kids bring, one performance that always stands out is our annual show at the Granville Island Kids Market. With two lions and an energetic God of Fortune entertaining the crowd, hundreds of kids learned about the joy of the Lunar New Year and had a blast celebrating the Year of the Horse with us.

The pink lion (with members from our all-female lion dance team) was a really big hit, with many young girls petting it and taking photos, some of whom were interested in joining the team to try lion dancing.

We hope we can continue inspiring boys and girls of all ages to learn more about our traditional cultural practices and look forward to coming back again next year.

Chau Luen Athletics has had a partnership with the Sunset on Fraser BIA for years, and we’re always thrilled for a chance to perform for all of the local businesses along Fraser Street. With its diverse selection of shops and the unique challenges that they present, it’s always an enjoyable experience for both the shopowners and our talented lion dance team.

We had an incredible time returning to Mount Pleasant BIA for our second annual lion dance tour. After a high-energy stage show at Sun Hop Park, we visited businesses all along Main Street, and the energy was unmatched.

One of our favorite parts of this tradition is the "choy cheng" (plucking the greens), a traditional business blessing. It was a privilege to visit so many hardworking local shops—shoutout to everyone at Anh and Chi, Goh Ballet, Blumen Florals, and many more for being such amazing hosts!

Special thanks to our friends at Hoy Ping Kung Fu and Lion Dance Club - Vancouver, UBC Kung Fu Association, and the Templeton Lion Dance & Kung Fu Club for sharing the stage and blessing the businesses with us!

Lion dance and kung fu are traditions built on community, where knowledge, discipline, and culture are passed from one generation to the next. When we share what we’ve learned, we help others grow stronger.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Give to Gain, reminds us that progress happens when we lift each other up. In our club, that means providing opportunities for women to train, teach, mentor, and support one another both in and outside of class. Every time someone shares their time, encouragement, or experience, it creates space for the next person to step in with confidence.

We’re proud to see more women continuing these traditions and contributing their strength, dedication, and leadership to our team and community. When we give, we gain — and when women thrive, our whole community rises with them.

A little rain couldn't rein us in! 😉🐎

At Vancouver’s 2026 Spring Festival Parade, the energy for the Year of the Fire Horse was as high as ever – and so was our team of lion dancers. We had a blast interacting with the community – from the young to the young-at-heart – and blessing many of the hard-working local businesses that give Chinatown its unique character.

Community and culture are at the core of our DNA, and we’re proud to showcase our traditions with people all across Vancouver during this special holiday. Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us, umbrellas in hand ☔. We can't wait to see you all again next year!

For the second straight year, we took centre stage at the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library. As one of our most popular community (free-to-public) events, there were hundreds of people watching us bring the Year of the Horse to life.

The grand atrium’s unmatched acoustics carried the thunderous drumming throughout the venue, delighting the guests. The wide open space allowed us to perform some acrobatic lion dance moves – this is significant for us since our Sigung Peter Wong was the first Sifu to debut high jumps and acrobatic lifts in Vancouver. Being able to carry on that legacy (and show some serious skills) is something we look forward to every year.

But the best part for us? Interacting with everyone who came to watch. We stuck around for over half an hour taking photos, chatting to guests, and using our lions to bring out hundreds of smiles. This is truly the best part of participating in community events, and we will strive to continue bringing joy to the public through the tradition of Chinese lion dancing.

Big announcement: We are proud to debut the talented Templeton lion dance team! Training with Sifu Mike Tan, Simo Janice Leung, and Jonathan Lee, the team has worked tirelessly this past semester, learning lion dance fundamentals in only 9 weeks.

February 10th marked their debut, performing at 3 shows in a single day. Each member of the team performed inside the lion during their visits to Hastings Elementary, wək̓ʷan̓əs Elementary, and in front of their peers at Templeton Secondary.

We are looking forward to their continued growth as they prepare for more public performances with the main team, so be sure to follow us to watch their progress!

One of our most treasured performances every year is to visit the brave kids at Ronald McDonald house to bring a little bit of Lunar New Year cheer to the families of some of the toughest warriors on the planet.

We pride ourselves on our hard work and resilience in lion dance and kung fu training, but it all pales in comparison to what these kids are battling through. We genuinely hope that our performance can bring even more joy and smiles to what Ronald McDonald house is striving to create.

We will always make time for these kids and we are already looking forward to performing again next year.
