…. Better than yesterday!

When Anton Geesink won Olympic gold in the open weight category, he had just done the unthinkable. A non-Japanese judoka had defeated Japan in judo, in Tokyo, on judo’s Olympic debut.

The Dutch team instinctively rushed toward the tatami, ready to celebrate one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history.

Geesink raised his hand and stopped them.

He understood what that moment meant. Not just a victory, but a cultural shock. The hosts had lost on their own ground, in their own martial art. Celebration, he felt, would cross a line.

That single gesture mattered as much as the medal. It showed that judo was not about humiliation or dominance, but respect, restraint, and responsibility in victory. Years later, Japanese officials and judoka would openly acknowledge that Geesink’s behavior helped preserve dignity on a day that could have easily turned bitter.

Geesink later explained his thinking simply:

“Judo is not about proving you are better than someone. It is about proving you are better than yesterday.”

That moment is why his name still carries weight far beyond results. His legacy lives not only in being the first non-Japanese Olympic champion, but in showing the world how to win with honor.

If this story gave you a new perspective on judo, share it. These moments deserve to be remembered.
