Last night was a great Kihon Kumite night! With most people watching the football game, our dojo had a smaller group— but the energy and focus were still strong .

After watching the first halftime, we started our training and pushed through an intense Kihon Kumite session. Meanwhile, the crowds at Lonsdale Quay were so overwhelming that police were asking people not to come to the area.

While the city was caught up in football fever, we were sharpening our skills one technique at a time.

Hiji Uchi (Elbow Strike) is a powerful close-range technique . It is effective in infighting situations where punches and kicks have limited space. Variations include rising (Age Hiji Uchi), downward (Oroshi Hiji Uchi), forward, and circular elbow strikes. Proper technique relies on hip rotation, body movement, and strong core engagement to generate maximum power .
Our Monday night was a great kihon & kumite combo night in North shore dojo . Osu!

North Vancouver Dojo Opening Ceremony

We were honored to celebrate the opening of our new North Vancouver Dojo with an inspiring ceremony featuring Tameshiwari (breaking), Kata, and Kumite demonstrations. These performances showcased the spirit, discipline, and determination that define Kyokushin Karate.

More than a dojo, this is a place for people who value gratitude, understand the importance of life, and seek continuous growth through martial arts. We look forward to building a strong community dedicated to self-discovery, perseverance, and lifelong learning .

Drills and kumite on the menu . Sai kata demonstration to end this great session .
This day was also considered nowrouz (new year), celebrated by many countries and for the Northern Hemisphere, Nowruz marks the beginning of spring.

Happy Nowrouz! Osu !

Last night is gone, and tomorrow unseen,
Why grieve for what cannot be known?
Take the cup of joy in the present hour —
For this fleeting breath is your own.

Kyokushin Kan Karate Dogi: Weight & Material Guide
The Kyokushin Dogi is built and designed to withstand intense kihon, heavy conditioning, and full-contact kumite.

Dogi Weight (Ounce Rating)
The ounce (oz) rating refers to the fabric weight per square yard. Higher oz means thicker, heavier, and more durable fabric.

Weight,
8 oz,Ultra-light & soft,"Beginners, kids, summer heat","
Pros: Quick drying. Cons: Lacks ""snap,"" wears out faster."
10 oz,Light-to-medium, Pros: Balanced comfort. Cons: Lighter than traditional .
12 oz Firm & structured Pros: Great snap, resists grabs. Cons: Longer drying time.
14 oz, Heavy & solid Pros: Max durability, classic look. Cons: Stiff initially, less breathable.

Material Comparison
100% Cotton
Pros: Excellent breathability, gets softer with age, classic "snap."

Cons: Will shrink if not pre-shrunk; requires more care.

Natural/Beige Option: Unbleached cotton offers an "old-school" aesthetic. It’s denser and feels "raw" at first but becomes incredibly soft over time.

Polyester Blend
Pros: Minimal shrinkage, stays white longer, dries very quickly.

Cons: Reduced "snap" compared to heavy canvas; can trap odors more easily than natural fibers.

Your material choice dictates how you handle the sweat.

Cotton (Best for Odor): Natural fibers allow airflow and release bacteria more easily during a wash.

Synthetic/Blends: While they dry fast, they tend to trap oils and bacteria, requiring more frequent deep-cleaning.

Tip: Never leave a wet dogi in your gym bag. Wash it immediately after training to maintain the integrity of the fabric and respect your training partners.

Quick Recommendations
Beginners: 8 oz Cotton-Poly Blend (Easy to move in and easy to wash).

Intermediate-advanced : 10–12 oz 100% Cotton (Starts building the traditional feel).

Advanced / Instructors / Ceremony : 12–14 oz Heavy Cotton Canvas (For the ultimate "snap" and longevity)

Care & Longevity
To prevent your Dogi from turning into a "mini-gi" or becoming brittle:

Air Dry Only: Strongly recommended for all weights.

Avoid Heat: Machine dryers cause shrinkage (even in pre-shrunk models) and damage the fibers.

Rotation: If you train more than 3 times a week, rotate between two Dogis to allow the fabric to "rest" and dry completely.

Final Note :
A clean, well-maintained dogi shows respect for your training partners, your dojo, and yourself. Osu !

Self defence , personal distance, and pressure points reviewed by Hanshi Shihan Hamid Asna ashari
Importance of Personal Distance in Self-Defence

Personal distance—may also be called maai in martial arts— (In traditional Japanese martial arts Maai refers to the optimal engagement distance between opponents. Mastering Maai is crucial for determining when to attack or defend effectively. ) is one of the most important elements of effective self-defence. It is the space you maintain between yourself and another person, and it directly affects your safety, awareness, and ability to respond.
