What is Légèreté?

For me it is the brilliant organization of French Classical training methods that respect the nature of the horse and it’s mental well-being while allowing them to become brilliant athletes full of expression and joy.
Philippe Karl, founder of the school of Lightness (English translation or École de Légèreté), has brought what was previously unattainable and forgotten in libraries and convoluted French texts to an organized and succinct framework from which any horse and rider can improve.
Starting from the ground, horses are carefully prepared to be ridden by introducing all of the aids on the ground including work on the lunge, in hand with the bit (Flexions) and then in walk and trot (in hand work) where all of the necessary pieces for lateral work, collection and ease of movement are explained. From there ridden work ensues always ensuring the basics are exceptional and well-understood by the horse.
By the end of the training program horses have a complete education and perform high level movements with ease and lightness.
For me, it was transformational not only for my horses but for my own person. To find beauty in softness and clarity, to find joy in small pieces and to feel freedom in the most complex of movements - all while respecting my partner, the horse.
