🚦 Managing Me: The Purpose of Stop Signs
I've been thinking about stop signs lately.
In a perfect world, perhaps we wouldn't need them. We would naturally slow down, look around, consider others, and make wise choices. We would move through life's intersections with awareness, care, and consideration.
But stop signs serve a purpose.
They remind us to pause.
They remind us that sometimes we need an external cue to do what our internal awareness should already be encouraging us to do.
I've learned that my most important job isn't managing others.
It's managing me.
My thoughts.
My reactions.
My motives.
My choices.
The older I get, the more I realize that growth isn't about controlling what comes out of someone else. It's about taking responsibility for what comes out of me.
And believe me, I've had plenty of moments where my outward responses reflected work I still needed to do on the inside.
That's why I appreciate the lesson of the stop sign.
Every pause is an opportunity to strengthen my awareness, exercise integrity, choose compassion, and ask myself:
💙 Am I responding from love, wisdom, and understanding—or am I simply reacting?
My hope is that over time these lessons become part of who I am. That even if the stop sign were gone, I would still pause. I would still look. I would still consider others.
Because true character isn't about what we do when we're being directed.
It's about who we become when no one is watching.

One of the most important lessons I continue to learn is this:
My job is to manage me.
Not selfishly.
Not coldly.
Not independently of others.
But because I am the only person who has access to my thoughts, my emotions, my reactions, my expectations, and my choices.
The moment I require someone else to speak a certain way, act a certain way, think a certain way, or respond a certain way before I can be okay, I have quietly handed them the keys to my emotional world.
I have made them responsible for something that belongs to me.
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have healthy boundaries.
It doesn’t mean we tolerate abuse.
It doesn’t mean we don’t communicate our needs.
It simply means that my growth is found in learning how to manage myself when life doesn’t go according to my preferences.
When I constantly ask others to adjust so that I can remain comfortable, patient, compassionate, or regulated, something inside me stops growing.
Just like a muscle that isn’t used eventually weakens, compassion that isn’t exercised begins to atrophy.
Patience grows when it is needed.
Grace grows when it is challenged.
Understanding grows when it is stretched.
Compassion grows when it is required.
The goal of ManagingMe™ is not to control the people around us.
The goal is to develop the inner strength to remain kind, wise, compassionate, and grounded even when others don’t behave the way we wish they would.
Because true freedom isn’t found in managing everyone else.
It’s found in learning to manage ourselves.
And when we stop asking others to be our inside control, we stop giving away our power.

Dear Friends...

There are many worthwhile causes in our communities, and we know every donation represents a thoughtful and personal decision.

If you have a heart for young people and believe that emotional resilience, compassion, leadership, and healthy relationships matter, we invite you to consider becoming a partner with Ambassadors of Compassion Canada Society.

For just $150, (that's 12.50 a week - 2 customized coffee drinks) a young person can participate in the full 12-week program. Monthly gifts of any amount also help us provide sponsorships for youth in middle school and high school who might not otherwise have access to these life-changing experiences.

There is no pressure—only an invitation 💕.

We are simply looking for people who genuinely believe in investing in the next generation and helping young people discover their value, purpose, and potential.

Thank you for taking a moment to learn about what we do and for caring about the future of our youth.

❤️ If this mission resonates with you, we would be honoured to have you join us.
