Leadership is not only revealed through visible decisions, results, or authority.

It is also revealed through the internal patterns shaping how those decisions are made.

Fear, insecurity, self-protection, and the need for control do not disappear when someone becomes a leader. If they remain unexamined, they often become embedded into the culture itself.

The strongest leaders I’ve worked with are not the ones pretending to have no blind spots.
They are the ones willing to look honestly at them.

Leadership is more than a title.

Ethical leadership is practiced amid uncertainty, incomplete understanding, and the ongoing work of responding rather than reacting.

It is revealed in how we respond under pressure and how we take responsibility for the environments we influence.

Ethical leadership develops through interrelated capacities such as steadiness, clear perception, care in action, and conscience-guided decision-making.

Together, these support environments where people feel safe to contribute, trust can grow, and meaningful performance becomes possible in sport, organizations, communities, and everyday life.

My first choice for my 5-a-side dream team wasn't about position or accolades.

It was about someone who led with calm, presence, and connection. Someone who helped others feel safe enough to be themselves. Someone who showed me, long before I had the words for it, that leadership can come from the back and still influence everything in front of it.

This pick reflects a deeper choice between two ways of leading: one rooted in fear and control, the other grounded in heart, empathy, and partnership.

I discussed this on the Dream Teams podcast with GALS FC, alongside Lorne Magill and Nora Beqaj. We explored what heart-centred leadership looks like in practice and why it matters well beyond sport.

Without trust, we can’t thrive.

When fear replaces trust, relationships break down in sport, in workplaces, and in communities.

In April 2023, I testified before the Government of Canada about the Safe Sport crisis. What I shared that day applies far beyond sport.

Trust is the foundation of care, courage, and connection. Even strong systems begin to collapse without it.

Without trust, we might still move forward, but the effort becomes heavier, and the journey takes more from us than it gives.

The work before us is twofold: to face what is unfolding in the world, and to look honestly at what is happening within and between us. Both shape who we are becoming.

✍️ NEW BLOG

I’ve seen joy stolen from people through fear and control.

A boy hesitates before passing. The coach doesn’t shout. He simply shakes his head, scribbles in his notebook, and looks away. The boy’s shoulders drop. For the rest of the game, he plays tentatively, afraid to make another mistake. Not a single word is spoken, but it completely changes this young boy’s approach to the game.

I’ve seen the same pattern in workplaces.

A colleague takes the fall for a mistake that wasn’t hers. The truth is known, but silence protects the powerful. Around the table, eyes drop. No one intervenes. The silence itself becomes complicity.

These are not just isolated moments. They reveal a choice we all face: do we reinforce domination, or nurture transformation?

This summer, I had the privilege of attending part of the Women’s EUROs. It reminded me that women’s sport has never been about sudden breakthroughs; it has been a steady flow carving through stone for generations.

That river is now flowing faster, stronger, and more visibly than ever. But visibility is not the same as equality. This movement needs all of us to keep it clear, strong, and free.

Football or Fightball?

This is a concept that took me decades to learn:
There’s more than one way to play a game—the game of life.

Some versions elevate us—fueled by courage, integrity, and respect.
Others distort—driven by fear, control, and the need to dominate.

The rules may look the same,
but the ethos beneath it tells the truth.

I see this more clearly now…
Not just in sport.
But in leadership, relationships, systems—in our daily lives.

The way we choose to play reveals what we truly value.
And every choice carries weight.
We can’t deny this responsibility, no matter how often we try.

🎥 WWC 2003 — Canada vs. China 🇨🇦🇨🇳 In July 2003, China’s women’s national team was ranked #4 in the world — still riding the legacy of being 1999 World Cup runners-up. They were a powerhouse. Canada? We were ranked outside the top 10 — considered significant underdogs. But on that day — October 2, 2003, in Portland — we rose. Charmaine Hooper’s early goal gave us the lead, and we never let go. We beat China 1–0 to reach the semi-finals — Canada’s best-ever finish at a senior World Cup. ✨ This was my favourite match, goal and moment in a Canadian jersey. No question. Some victories change the story. This one did — for all of us. 🇨🇦❤️ Happy Canada Day!
