To our aspiring Black Belts… KEEP GOING

We asked our black belts what advice they would give to the students who look up to them and dream of one day tying on that black belt themselves.

Every black belt was once a beginner standing where you are now.🥋🖤

Discipline is not about always feeling motivated.

It is choosing to train when staying home would be easier. Practising the basics when you would rather move on. Staying focused when your mind starts looking for an excuse.

Every class gives you another chance to make that choice.

Over time, those decisions build more than martial arts skill. They build the ability to follow through, manage frustration, and keep working toward something that matters.

You may not leave every class feeling transformed.

But keep choosing to show up, and eventually you will realize you are no longer the same person who started.

Focus is not something kids magically develop because we tell them to “pay attention.”

It has to be taught, practised, and reinforced in small ways.

Here are three things parents can try at home this week:

1. Make sure you have their attention before giving instructions. Say their name, pause, and wait until they are with you before you start talking.

2. Give one task at a time. “Brush your teeth” works better than “brush your teeth, grab your shoes, pack your bag, and hurry up.” That is not instruction. That is a verbal obstacle course.

3. Praise the effort you notice. “I saw you stay with that even when it was hard” teaches a child more than a quick “good job.”

We use the same ideas on the mats. Clear expectations, focused practice, and recognition of effort help kids build attention skills they can carry into school, home, and life.

Courage does not always look loud.

Sometimes it looks like a child standing quietly, getting ready to try again.

The bravest kids are not always the ones who walk in full of confidence. Sometimes they are the ones who felt nervous last class and still came back. The ones who made a mistake and kept going. The ones who are still learning to believe in themselves, one class at a time.

That kind of courage matters.

At Okami Kai, we notice the effort behind the progress. We notice the child who keeps showing up. We notice the small moments that build confidence long before the belt changes colour.

That is where growth really starts.

Some moments on the mats are not really about technique.

They are about connection.

A child laughing with a parent. A shared challenge. A little movement, trust, and encouragement. These moments may seem small, but they matter.

That is one of the reasons we love our Lil’ Dragons Parent & Tot program.

At this age, martial arts is not about perfection. It is about helping young children feel safe, confident, active, and connected while parents get to be part of the experience.

These are the moments kids remember.

Most people think fitness is about getting stronger. That matters, of course. Strength helps you lift, carry, push, pull, and feel more capable in daily life.

There is another piece that often gets overlooked: POWER

Power is your ability to use strength quickly. It is what helps you catch yourself when you trip, change direction, regain your balance, react quickly, and move with confidence instead of hesitation.

That is one of the reasons martial arts training is so valuable. A punch is not just an arm movement. A kick is not just swinging a leg. Footwork is not just stepping around the room. Every movement requires timing, balance, coordination, focus, and intention.

Martial arts teaches the body to move rapidly with control. Not recklessly. Not randomly. With purpose.

That matters for kids learning coordination and self-control, teens building confidence, and adults who want to stay active, capable, and strong as they age. Fitness builds the foundation, and martial arts teaches you how to use it.

The goal is not just to sweat more. The goal is to move better, become more balanced, and feel more confident in what your body can do.

Move like you mean it.

A belt is just a piece of fabric.

What gives it meaning are the people helping a child earn it.

The rides to class.
The encouragement after a tough day.
The quiet reminders to keep trying.
The parent who kneels down, ties the belt, and chooses to be part of the journey.

These small moments matter more than most people realize.

Children may not remember every technique they practise, but they remember who showed up. They remember who helped them get ready. They remember who believed in them when they were still learning to believe in themselves.

This photo is not really about a belt.

It is about being there.
