Continuing the tradition…but stepping it up a notch!
One of the most rewarding aspects of hunting, fishing and harvesting wild game is being able to share the rewards with friends and family. Taking the time to properly care for, and process and prepare the harvest is what honours the life it took to provide. The tradition of Sharing the bounty with others goes back longer in time more than any of us can imagine.
I am fortunate that my own passion of the outdoors and my everyday job align and I’m able to visit parts of the country that I wouldn’t otherwise be lucky enough to experience. The arctic is one of those places. The ties to land the local people have is something I truly admire and is a place I feel very fortunate to have experienced.
I could ramble on about that for hours but to keep this on point, here’s what I shared with my family and friends this year:
Arctic Char (Nunavut) cured and cold smoked
Arctic Grayling (Nunavut) cold smoked and canned
Lake Trout (Lake Athabasca, SK) cured and smoked.
Canada Goose Pastrami (Saskatchewan)
Smoked Elk Roast (Saskatchewan)
Hand Picked Berry Jams/Gelly:
Cloud Berry (Akpik) Nunavut
Crow Berry (Nunavut)
Buffalo Berry (Saskatchewan)
Chokecherry (Saskatchewan)
Saskatoon (Saskatchewan)
Raspberry (Saskatchewan)
Sea Buckthorn (Saskatchewan)
Hawthorn Berry (Saskatchewan)
Home made gluten free crackers made with flax and berries listed above to provide a vessel to transport the goods down the hatch!
