Andy is a renowned forest ecologist and naturalist, and co-author of Mushrooms of British Columbia and the brand-new Plants of the Pacific Coast, a beautiful new field guide to the plants of our coastal region. 📚🌲
We’ll explore a section of the Lighthouse Loop, keeping our eyes peeled for what’s growing along the trail and learning more about the fascinating fungi, plants and forest life all around us.

Wednesday Weekly Wonder: What is floating in the water at Wedding Point?

🫧The whitish beige bubbles floating on the surface is sea foam!! 🫧

Sea foam is created when strong waves mix air and the protien from dead microscopic plants called phytoplankton gives the water enough surface tension to create bubbles.
Sea foam is caused when wind and waves mix air into ocean waters. When we see lots of sea foam it indicated that the sea is producing tons of food for creatures higher up the food chain, as many ballen whales filter phytoplankton from the water as part of thier diet.

🌊🌿The brown things that can trick your eyes into thinking you are seeing sea otters or sea lions is Bull Kelp!!🌿🌊

Bull kelp is an important kelp species that can grow up to 30 meters a year, forming underwater forests that look just like the ones we see on land. Like the forest, Bull Kelp provides a home for many organisms and protects against costal errosion.

🔎 Keep an eye out for sea foam and Bull Kelp floating in the water or even some that has been washed a shore the next time you explore the trail!!
