boat captain, David specializes in small group, personalized tours to view the magnificent icebergs that often frequent the main tickle just off from his fishing interpretation centre, Prime Berth. In addition to iceberg tours, David will take you to explore the rugged coastline of Main Tickle, and view the thousands of nesting birds on the Baccy Islands, on your way to Gut Tickle and through the Salt Hr. Canal to the picturesque fishing village of Herring Neck. Your view of the fishing stages from the water will be a highlight of your Newfoundland & Twillingate vacation. In addition David can take you to the little fishing village of Tizzard's Harbour, his hometown, where he has set his lobster trap since the age of six. From May to October you could also fish for cod during your tour!!! Tourists who take boat tours with Capt. From the white cliffs of Dover, England, her homeland , to the white bergs of Twillingate, Abigail was a ray of sunshine the color of her flaming hair, on this grey , foggy day. I persuaded her to takeoff her bulky floater jacker so this photo would represent the red, white and blue, as that is the next destination for Abi, the solo world traveller that she has become. I asked her what was the motivation for a young lady , like her, travelling to so many different countries. Her answer was telling: "The world is too big to stay in just one place!" Well Groundhog Day is tomorrow, so might look forward to the coming summer and post a shot, as regardless of what else there is to see and do, I love to take folks from away to the place I still call Home..where I have so many memories of growing up in the fishing stage, the motor boats and the cod traps of my youth. Although fishing stages and flakes full of drying cod no longer line the harbour shoreline, the beauty of the place is hard to erase. Interesting sometimes to look back at the tasks we undertook in making Prime Berth Fishing Heritage an interesting destination for tourists and to give thanks to friends who gave me a hand along the way. In 2006, I heard on the news that a Sei whale had unfortunately beached and died in Fortune harbour, about 30 miles or so from Prime Berth. As it was close to the community government was looking for someone to move it to a more remote location. I decided to tow it home and secured it in Fools Hr on Trump Island for 3 years and eventually articulated the skeleton at Prime Berth--an interesting project undertaken 19 years ago and thank you Roy & Jim for your help in bringing it home.

Eleven years ago, Chantelle, from Ontario took a memorable tour with me and was fortunate on two counts..(1) we had a great encounter with the Orcas and (2) secondly, on board was the star of the TV series "Suits"! So today I was deligted to take Chantelle and her mom out to see the puffins, the Bullbirds ( (Dovekies ) and the opportunity to catch a couple mackerel. When two ladies from the Emerald Isle request a tour on this grey, foggy , October day, where does one take them and what to do. For me, first stop is Trump Island, to discuss a little history, namely Joey's resettlement program and the houses floated from there to the picturesque fishing village of Tizzard's Hr., my hometown .Then a little tour of the old homestead, sadly silent today, plus a little treat of juicy apples from Mother's tree. Finally out to see the eagles in Beachy Cove and watch the flocks of bull birds just outside Cuckold's Rocks. All in all, a memorable experience for Anne and Isabelle! As usual click for best view!

Whether there's bergs, whales or not, a stop at the Old Homestead ( God's Country, as we call it ) is always a top priority of my tours to give visitors from away a touch of the place and time where I was so fortunate to have been born. Today I had the privilege to take a young couple, celebrating their honeymoon in our fair province, on a tour and wondering what I could do to make the visit a little memorable for them, I decided to give Alyssa the wheel and be the symbolic co-captain, not only of this little excursion, but of the journey they have begun together while Phil stands by his new bride . I often compare such a new beginning to a voyage at sea with the only certainty that there will be times of both calm and rough seas. I also shared this poem with the new couple--a poem I wrote especially for my son and his wife--at their marriage celebration over 20 years ago.
I called it .....
"Sea of Life!"
A ship slips out on her maiden voyage
On a wide , uncertain sea..
So too , young lovers, pledged for life
Know not their destiny.
But love is not for the faint of heart
Or those too scared to chance
That by their actions they might fall
Upon life’s bumpy path.
Wise mates know that every voyage
Must preparations make.
For hidden perils along the way
Would the strongest vessel break.
For to navigate the sea of life
Is but a simple task
When a fair wind fills your unfurled sails
And speeds you on your path.
But when dark clouds of storm appear
Bad weather for to brew.
Then you must grasp each others hand
And help each other through.
There are times in the trough of the deepest swell
When the crest seems far away.
But the darkest hour of the night
Is the one before the day.
As they embark upon life’s voyage
Young lovers pledged for life.
Play hard together in the calm
And hold each other in the strife.

The 2 most coveted wishes on visitors' bucket list when they arrive at Twillingate are to experience icebergs and whales and sometimes, although not often, toruists are fortunate to see both in the same camera frame, as in this photo I took in June of 2023, with a whale seeming to beckon us to come visit the berg. What a treat , on our afternoon tour, this beautiful Saturday for those kids from Luxembourg and Toronto to be greeted in my hometown of Tizzard's hr, by Sam, the beautiful 8 month old , loveable,Newfoundland dog.
