Brady Googoo
*ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT*
Brady Googoo, 18, plays defence with the Mi’Kmaq Warriors 🥍 talks with Truro Pulse about his love of Lacrosse, and his sense of community.
TRURO PULSE: When did you first start playing lacrosse, and what made you fall in love with the game?
BRADY: I first started playing in tiny tots, but didn’t start taking it seriously until the second year of U15. It was my second year of U15 when all my buddies joined lacrosse. They all just wanted to give it a go and we all couldn’t put our stick down. Every week we would get together and hangout down by the tennis court and just play lacrosse, shooting around and having fun. There would probably be 10 of us shooting around at the time. It was basically all I did that summer.
TRURO PULSE: How would your teammates describe your playing style?
BRADY: Think they would say I play smart. Being a smaller guy on defence I gotta use my positioning over physicality. Combine that with my quick feet and I’m locked.
TRURO PULSE: What does lacrosse mean within your community or family?
BRADY: Within the past 3 years lacrosse has grown a lot in my family and my community. Before me and my two other cousins began playing lacrosse it was only my older brother who ever played. Now there’s 7 of us who have played. That summer where all of us began playing we ended up growing the sport quite a lot in our community, and I’m now glad to say it’s not hard to see a kid in Millbrook with a lacrosse stick.
TRURO PULSE: Do you feel a special connection to the sport because of its Indigenous origins?
BRADY: I definitely feel a bigger connection to lacrosse than any other sport. Boxing being the exception. Being indigenous in the sport, has always made me feel proud of playing, and the need to grow the sport in my community.
TRURO PULSE: What message would you want young Indigenous athletes to hear?
BRADY: Be proud of who you are and never forget your roots.
TRURO PULSE: What’s one thing people underestimate about lacrosse players?
BRADY: Often when people think of lacrosse they think of field lacrosse, and often believe that it’s a soft sport compared to others. But many don’t realize that in Canada we play box, with cross checking, whacking, hitting and fighting, it’s a damn rough sport.
TRURO PULSE: If you could grow the game in one way, what would you change or improve?
BRADY: I wish it was a household sport like others. But if I could change one thing, it would probably be the music. Like how they do it in the NLL. Have it played at all times.
TRURO PULSE: What does it mean to represent your community while competing?
BRADY: It means a lot to me to represent my community and especially Mi’kma’ki. Being the Mi’kmaw Warriors, we only have 3 players that are indigenous on the team, with me and my cousin being the only two Mi’kmaw players. So I believe being the representation means a lot
