Great information here!

When I started taking pool seriously, I thought getting better meant making harder shots. It took me a long time to learn the truth. The players who win aren't the ones who make the flashiest balls. They're the ones who make the smartest decisions. And a huge part of that is the defensive game, the part almost nobody practices.

Here is the simple idea that can change everything for you. Every shot in pool is a bet. Before I shoot, I ask myself a few quick questions:

❓ How often, out of ten tries, would I actually make this ball?
❓ How likely am I to also get good position on the next one?
❓ And if I play safe instead, how good can that safety be, and how hard is it to pull off?

By a good safety, I mean this: can I leave the cue ball somewhere that fully hooks my opponent, so they have no clear shot at all? I take it even further. I also think about how hard their kick shot will be, and what outcomes are realistically left for them.

But here is the part most players forget. Just as important as how good my safety could be is what I leave behind if it isn't perfect. The best safeties leave my opponent nothing even when they don't come off exactly as planned. That is why, most of the time, my main focus is the object ball, the ball I am trying to hide, and not the cue ball. Hiding the cue ball too is a wonderful bonus, but only when it costs me nothing.

Sometimes a light "containing" safety is enough, just leaving things awkward enough that they can't do any damage. Other times, everything more ambitious is simply too difficult to pull off. So I pick whichever option gives me the best odds, weighing the payoff, the risk if it goes wrong, and how hard it is to execute. That is what percentage play really means. It isn't just "safety or no safety." It is also choosing what kind of safety to play: am I controlling the cue ball, the object ball, or both at once? Most of the time, the object ball is the one that matters most.

And here is an interesting twist. You've probably heard plenty of people say that in pool you are only playing the table and yourself. You've even heard it many times from me. But the truth is, it is also about who is sitting across from you. Against a beginner, a simple safety is usually enough. Against a strong player, it can be worth taking a little more risk to leave them with absolutely nothing. And sometimes forgeting the safety altogether and just go for the shot is the best choice, because keeping a dangerous opponent stuck in his chair is worth more than playing it safe. Would you rather get into a safety battle with Efren Reyes, or take a slightly riskier shot and keep Efren away from the table?

There is so much to learn about safeties alone, it's honestly crazy. I can't fit it all into one post. But I have made a few videos on exactly this topic, so if you want to go deeper, pick one from below.

🎯 The drill that builds it: one simple exercise that sharpens your speed control, your aim, and your feel for the table all at once. https://youtu.be/b35jiyXGm5I

🎱 The battle that shows it in action: a full rack against Kristina "Kiki" Grim where neither of us would give in, around ten safeties in a row. https://youtu.be/dPpDyRUu1ew

And finally, one thing I wish someone had told me sooner. Be patient. Two players trading safeties, each one quietly trying to leave the other with nothing, is one of the most beautiful battles in all of pool. Learn to enjoy it, and it will win you far more matches than another hour spent hammering your break.

Now go to the table and work on these things. Your future self will thank you.
