We were thrilled to read this news of two mothers and world-class Canadian competitors earning the right to continue to practice both during the Tokyo Olympics.
Basketball star Kim Gaucher was granted permission to be accompanied at the games by her infant daughter and husband, while boxer Mandy Bujold won a hearing that says accommodations must be made for women who were pregnant or postpartum during qualification periods. These decisions came on the same day and, as Doug Smith wrote for The Star, “if the decision took longer than it should have, at least it finally came.”
We celebrate the effort and dedication of these women, and women everywhere, who work tirelessly to achieve distinction in their fields and the equal opportunity they deserve.
