Annie Balasubramanian ’23 returned to SCS recently to speak with Ms Guarasci’s Kinesiology class, sharing more about the unique journey she’s been navigating since she graduated. A sailor racing for the Canadian Sailing Team and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Annie is campaigning towards the LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
Annie explained the basics of sailing races to the class before taking them on a deeper dive of what the sport requires from a kinesiology lens. She also described her Team Canada pursuits and the decision to pause her university education in order to go after her Olympic dream.

The visit also featured several interactive activities. Students had to guess which muscle groups are used during hiking, a sailing term for leaning your body weight out over the edge of a boat so that it doesn’t tip over in the wind. Then, after looking at three energy systems – aerobic base, anaerobic bursts, and VO2 Max – the class was tasked with collaborating in small groups to identify the root cause of three hypothetical athletes’ problems and suggest exercises to address the issue.

Annie, SCS is cheering you on!

After reading The Tray of Togetherness by author Flo Leung, the Grade 2s reflected on the traditions that matter most to them and their families. They then created five yummy-looking foods from modelling clay to represent meaningful celebrations in their lives and paired each one with a written reflection about its significance.

Way to go, Grade 2!

Last week, Grades 6 and 9 set off for Willowgrove Outdoor Education Centre for a day of collaboration and team building!

Through a variety of activities, the students worked on building relationships with their classmates and connecting with peers in the other grade. Each challenge encouraged teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and cooperation, resulting in a day full of chances to strengthen connections within and across the two grades, build trust, and grow as a community. (Full-grade experiences like this one are an important piece of our overall approach to experiential learning at SCS!)

One of the more surprising chapters in SCS history? We weren't always a girls' school! When St. Clement's opened in 1901, both boys and girls attended. In fact, by 1917, boys actually outnumbered girls. SCS became an all girls' school in 1932 and adopted the uniform of navy tunic, white blouse, and iconic red blazer with school crest that remains to this day.

Last Friday, eight SCS students headed to Branksome Hall for the Toronto Youth STEM and Innovation Conference (TYSIC). Students spent the day learning from leaders in technology, finance, and other STEM-related fields, while also putting their own ideas into action through innovation challenges. The experience culminated in student pitches presented to a panel of judges.

Congratulations to all of our participants for embracing the challenge and sharing their creativity and innovative thinking!

SCS had exceptional success at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Championships (IISPSC) in Oakville this past weekend! Valerie F. ’28, Eli W. ’27, and Cherry Y. ’27 each gave committed and engaging performances in a wide variety of speeches both planned (pre-written and practiced) and impromptu ("on the spot").

Cherry and Valerie competed together in the Cross-Examination Debate finals; Valerie also achieved the distinction of reaching the finals in all three of her categories: Cross-Examination Debate, Parliamentary Debate, and Extemporaneous Speaking.

As a result of her performances, we are so proud to announce that Valerie has been selected to be one of the representatives for Team Canada at the World Public Speaking Championships in Shanghai, China in March!

Congratulations to all of our SCS competitors for their hard work, personal growth, and accomplishments last weekend!
