ABYC Race Teams — Summer Season Recap
This summer was a fantastic season for the ABYC Race Team. Across all five teams, our sailors took on new challenges, competed at events across the country, and made significant progress on and off the water. From first-time regattas to podium finishes and major championships, there was plenty to celebrate.
Opti Green
The Opti Green team had a strong summer of racing and development. At the Hans Fogh Regatta, Liam Matier finished 2nd overall, while Liam and Eva Popovsky each won a race. Their ability to compete at the front of the fleet was a great reflection of their progress throughout the season.
Opti Champ
The Opti Champ team had an exciting summer competing against some of the strongest sailors in the country. Cooper Lenzi is currently on track to win the Ontario Sailing Grand Prix and finished 5th Canadian at CORK. At the PCYC regattas, both Nathan Bissett and Cooper Lenzi earned age-group podium finishes, with Cooper also winning Four Sisters.
Both sailors will compete at Opti Nationals in Vancouver, where they will race for the opportunity to earn a spot on the 2027 international team. Their commitment and drive throughout the season have been fantastic to watch.
Laser
The Laser team had a strong season built around consistency and discipline. Zac Shuaib had an outstanding performance at the Hans Fogh Regatta, winning the event.
The team also showed remarkable consistency throughout the year, with no letter scores aside from over-early starts. This reflects their growing ability to sail a complete regatta and make smart decisions on the race course. The entire team also competed at Sail Canada Youth Fest, gaining valuable experience on a national stage.
C420 High Performance
The C420 High Performance team took on strong competition throughout the summer. Will Jarvis and Sophia Lamb had a standout performance at the Seahorse Regatta, finishing 5th overall, while Tristan Hudson and Liam Nelson finished in the top 20 at CORK.
The team also reached an important milestone, with two ABYC boats competing at the C420 North American Championship. Having multiple teams represent the club at one of the biggest events on the C420 calendar was a fantastic accomplishment.
