It was all good just a week ago…

What an elite group of people. I’m still surprised by how well this turned out this year and it’s thanks to the contributions of everyone involved.

We started year 1 in the middle of a pandemic and year 2 was looking a little shaky with co-founder out in Africa preparing for his upcoming season.

Even though he wasn’t physically present there’s no way camp would’ve taken place without Myck’s moves from continents away, ensuring many of our guests, sponsors, and coaches made it out.

Everyone who came out to camp did so to give back to the kids and the community. And seeing this many like-minded, good-intentioned, and highly successful people, many of which have vastly different stories and backgrounds, was truly inspiring.

Special shout out to . Coach Hussein stepped up in a major way to fill in for Myck in a leadership role this year and with so many moving parts I would not have been able to keep things running so smoothly without him!

And of course . If you were at camp you may not have even noticed Pat but he’s the real MVP. He’s the reason we’re able to host this camp at Eastview. He’s the first one to arrive in the morning and last to leave. And he can set up 2 canopies in the time it takes 4 of us to complete 1.

Already looking forward to year 3 and getting the opportunity to connect with you all soon!

LETS TALK STRENGTH TRAINING
💪
I think we all understand the knee joint is not meant to bend that way. To forcefully hyperextend to that degree under the weight of a full grown man plus gravity and come out with no structural damage is incredible. The way Giannis is already able to run, jump, cut, and the numbers he’s putting up are astonishing.

Watching the game I heard the commentators mention how his strength training was credited with minimizing the severity of the injury. Obviously this is common knowledge amongst those of us in the exercise science world.

BUT this is an important reminder to YOUNG , , and SPORT .

Youth sport culture has become obsessed with conditioning work and flashy fancy exercises that look cool on social media. But one of the main reasons for a strength and conditioning program is often being neglected.

INJURY PREVENTION. If you’re the fastest, strongest and most talented athlete in the game that’s great. But if you keep getting hurt and can’t play then that’s killing your development and impact on the game.

is misunderstood. I’m not just talking about heavy squats and deadlifts, but a true well rounded evidence based, research informed program designed for specific and individual athletes.

I will make another post later with more details of what I’m talking and it’s specific benefits.

🎵 “Reminiscing” on 2020

From landmine rotations in January on Vancouver Island in a still normal world.

To with (happy birthday 🥳) in February.

Skipping ahead to the mass popularity of garage and basement gyms out of necessity in November and coming full circle to landmine rotations in December.

Through all the challenges faced I am still on my same mission and finished 2020 better than I started the year.

Over the next little while I will be filling in the gaps of the past year and posting some of my journey with accompanying reflections and lessons learned.

We all stumble but it’s how you get up and learn from the fall that matters

Box Jump Series Volume 3

Progressing to some single leg options now that we’ve built a foundation on 2 feet. Obvious benefits to , , and dynamic sports like .

1️⃣ developing single leg power but landing on 2 feet for safe landing.

2️⃣ adding a multidirectional component but still landing on 2 feet

3️⃣ advanced single leg plyo. Triple cone/hurdle hop to box jump. All on the same leg with single leg landing.

*Remember to progress appropriately. Skipping steps not only won’t benefit you but may increase chance of injury. Performance gains come from quality of movement. Master the basics

Box Jump Series Volume 2

After mastering the basics from volume 1 we can add some variability to our . This is our first series including . Standard box jumps are good for power but as they don’t utilize the stretch shortening cycle, they are not true plyos.

1️⃣cone/hurdle hop to
We’ve already mastered both landing and jumping so now we can put it together. We just want a little hop here to keep it relatively low impact since it is already producing more force than a standard box jump. We’re utilizing the reactive component here to absorb landing and quickly transfer to a jump. This is a little more specific to most sprinting and jumping sports. But the foundation from series 1 is crucial.

2️⃣ adding a multi directional component here. Very applicable to a sport like but really any sport that requires quick change of direction and acceleration.

3️⃣ Depth jump. These are advanced as they produce the most force. There is a heavy eccentric component which the body must have built up towards or risk injury. The higher the drop, the greater the force but also the more stress it puts on the body.

Like with any lift, progress your plyos properly. I wouldn’t have some clean if they can’t front squat and if an isn’t comfortable overhead then they’re not snatching. Treat your jumps and plyos the same way for maximum benefits and safety

Coming up on that final week before starts!

If you haven’t yet, check out the camp and the star studded roster of coaches and pro athletes we have on the squad.

I’m so excited to be a part of this because not only are we bringing an incredible experience to these kids but we are ensuring all kids have equal opportunity by providing scholarships to those who can’t afford the cost. In addition, all proceeds raised will be going to charity to support underprivileged youth.

On top of all that, a major focus of camp will be bringing people together from different walks of life to learn about and work with each other. We want to develop great athletes, but more importantly help kids develop into good people.

Every little bit counts. You change the world by starting in your community and spreading outwards

Hey everyone! I’m helping put on a multi sport arts and athletics camp in August. All proceeds will be going to charity
With everything going on in the world we wanted to do something to really make a positive impact in society. All the conversations and posting on social media is awesome but here is how you can directly help
👇
The link in my bio takes you to the official website. Here you can get more details as well as register for the camp. There is also a link for donations
Not only do we have professionals in each sport providing coaching, but we are emphasizing real life lessons outside the field of sport with the goal of creating awareness of others and spreading unity. We have a plan to bring people together from different backgrounds, race, sport, and socioeconomic status
❤️
We are committing to a certain number of scholarships to this camp and your donations can help provide an opportunity for a kid who otherwise would not be able to afford this experience. Remaining funds will go towards underprivileged youth by creating more opportunities through community programs and facilities
🙏
Every kid should have an equal opportunity to succeed in life. You can help us provide these opportunities that so many, including myself, had the privilege of growing up

For the past couple months I have been working for a tech company, TwentyBN. It’s not a career change. They are building a fitness app and brought me on board to help design and build the exercise catalogue and provide verbal cues for proper form and corrections
🤓
What makes this app so special is that it provides feedback in real time and actually watches you workout as if it were your coach. So if your lunges are looking a little shallow it will let you know in real time and give you necessary feedback on how to correct your form. In addition, there is always post workout feedback so that you know what to work on for next time and can compare progress
🦾
Meet Allie , your virtual coach. You can find it in the App Store but unfortunately it is not yet available on all devices. As a Microsoft backed start up it is not yet available on Android (but we’re working on that). Keep in mind that this is a very complex technology and so it is only working on iPhone 8 and higher as well as newer generation iPads
📱
We are constantly working on it and making upgrades. We are regularly adding new exercises and program types. Keep in mind that adding one single exercise takes several weeks to implement because we have to account for every way someone may perform that exercise incorrectly and prepare Allie to detect and correct the client. Essentially, I have to teach Allie everything I’ve learned in my 10 years coaching
🤯
This has been such an interesting and fun experience. Providing a new set of challenges and discovering new ways to communicate and share knowledge. I’m pretty excited about where the app is currently and it’s just getting started. Please check it out and share any comments or feedback you have. I’m looking forward to continuing to build this thing and watch it grow! @ Fitness Ally App

Back in to become a Master. Some of you already know, some don’t. So here’s my official announcement. Got this acceptance letter a few months back with an offer of admission to my dream program
𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠
This is a unique program that essentially combines the bachelor of education program with graduate level research work and a thesis
📑
I was actually interested in teaching when I started my undergrad, before I got into S&C and training. Since I finished my bachelor’s I’ve been looking at Masters programs in kinesiology but never found the one that made me apply. Then I discovered this one
🎓
While the science is obviously important, my favourite part of coaching is the art. The human aspect. Growing relationships, building buy in and creating culture. I love the work is doing and he’s an inspiration for my decision and path
🤓
This program will improve my abilities and skill set as a coach. I will conduct research and write a thesis on a topic of my choice relating to coaching and performance. And as a bonus I will be qualified to teach high school and middle school
👨🏼‍🏫
I’m excited to start this journey in September to diversify my skill set. To not only become an even better coach, but be more than just a strength coach
