The attan is one of the oldest forms of dance in Afghanistan, dating as far back as 2000 BCE. The folk dance was conducted by the people of Afghanistan in the time of war, or during celebrations (weddings, new year, socials etc.). Today it is performed by many Afghan’s around the world as the National Dance of Afghanistan (Attane-Melli). The traditional folk dance is performed to the sound of instruments including the dhol, rubab and/or flute. There are many different kinds of Attan in Afghanistan, including Wardaki, Logari,, Kochyano, Khattak, etc. The base of the dance involves individuals forming a large circle and moving to the beat of the instruments. The dance traditionally begins in a slow pace with a slow beat and gradually moves faster with the beat of the instrument.
