This was our third and final segment on the Peace River. As we left the town of Peace River, we faced off against strong headwinds for a couple days. Compounded with the already intense current, this made any forward progress a real battle. We often had to resort to getting out of the canoe and towing it along the shore with a rope because paddling became so slow.

The wind picked up until one day the gusts reached 71 km/hr while it was raining and 4°C. We pushed onward, nonetheless. In the midst of the bad weather, we were lucky enough to run into a local who informed us of some campgrounds with wood stoves and shelters where we were able to dry our gear and warm up.

The weather eventually improved and so did the current in the lead up to Thanksgiving, so we were able to make some good headway. On Thanksgiving, we made it into British Columbia and the current dramatically picked up again. We slowly, but surely made our way up to the John Horgan Dam (Site C), where we were lucky enough to receive permission and a security es**rt from BC Hydro to portage through the site.

Past the dam, the river current was completely absent and we were able to finally paddle unimpeded for the first time in over a month. Around the Halfway River, we rounded a bend and laid eyes on the Rocky Mountains for the first time! It was truly an incredible experience. We are so excited to pass through the mountains in the next segment!

So close to a huge milestone! Canada by Canoe is almost at $100,000 raised for True North Aid. Segment 15 was our second stretch of the trip spent paddling up the Peace River. It was truly a time of change.

As we travelled upstream, the landscape shifted from low mud flats and wetlands to massive forested river banks. The leaves dramatically changed to brilliant yellows and oranges as we entered the depths of autumn.

At the start of the segment, we noticed enormous hoards of geese congregating and honking on the river banks, but after only a few days their numbers began to rapidly decline as they migrated southward.

The current gradually began to increase, too. At many points we had to get out of the canoe and drag it up along the shore to make any progress. We’ve begun to experience our first mornings below 0 degrees. We often wake up with frost coating our packs and our tent.

Upon arriving in Peace River, we were met with incredible generosity and kindness from a local family who provided us with showers, laundry, food, and a warm cabin. We are extremely grateful for their hospitality!
