The Growth No One Claps For
Nobody watches a seed underground.
There's no audience for it. No applause when it cracks open in the dark, no one timing how long it takes to send down that first root. The seed does the work before there's anything to see. By the time you notice the sprout, the real work is already done.
Training is the same.
Most of what changes in you on this mat will never be witnessed. Not by me, not by your training partners, not by anyone standing on the sideline with a phone out. The moment you stay calm instead of reactive — that's invisible. The moment you choose the harder technique because it's honest instead of the easy one because it's fast — nobody sees that either. It happens inside you, in half a second, and then it's gone.
I still catch myself waiting for someone to notice when I've held my temper, or stayed patient through a bad class, or resisted the urge to check my phone mid-drill. I'm not above this. I'm working through it the same as you.
Here's what I've learned to trust instead: I don't need the seed to explain itself while it's underground. Neither do you.
You'll know your own growth before anyone else does. Less tension in your shoulders walking into work. A harder edge of patience with people who used to wreck your calm. The itch to check your phone, quieter than it used to be. Nobody put that on your Instagram. It happened anyway.
Aristotle didn't measure arete — excellence of character — by applause. He measured it by consistent right action, repeated until it became who you are, whether or not anyone was keeping score. That's the whole model. Character built in private, revealed in public only later, and only when it's ready.
So be honest about your own scoreboard. You already know what effort you've put in on days no one was watching. That knowledge doesn't need a witness to be real.
The bloom isn't the goal. It's just the proof. Everything that matters happens before that — underground, unseen, unclapped-for.
Keep watering the root. The surface will take care of itself.
