Natyakalalayam

Natyakalalayam Director: "Natyakalamani" Smt. Vasantha Daniel in Toronto, Canada. Disciple of K.N. Dandayuthapanipillai. Thandhayuthapanipillai. Thandhayuthapanipillai, Smt.

Additional branches of Vasantha Daniel's Natyakalalayam currently operating in Sri Lanka,Norway, France & U.S. Natyakalalayam was formed in 1959 in Chennai, India by the legendary Padmashri K.N. Thandhayuthapanipillai, where a handful of students including his daughter Uma and Srividya helped build the foundation in hopes of a new era for Bharathanatyam. The institution not only served East Indian

students over the years, but it also attracted students from different parts of the world including England and the United States. Keeping in mind traditions and morals from earlier teachings, Natyakalalayam’s roots have been known to promote the richness and value of Bharathanatyam as a distinct art form. This could not have been achieved without the discipline and artistic touch of Natyakalalayam’s Founder, Padmashri K.N. His book “Aadal Isai Amudam” was set to release on November 7, 1974 with all of the arrangements to commemorate this auspicious day. However, on the night of October 9th, 1974, he was struck with a heart attack after completing an Arangetram. Although he passed away while just entering the pinnacle of his career, he was already known as a legend in Bharathanatyam. Due to the wishes of the Late Great Padmashri K.N. Vasantha Daniel opened the main branch of Natyakalalayam in Sri Lanka in 1968. Guruji inspired her to be the first student leave Sri Lanka to join Natyakalalayam in India. She received her Diploma in Bharathanatyam and Nattuvangam and was also awarded “Natyakalamani” by her Guru. Under her guidance, Natyakalalayam has developed into one of the most reputable dance institutions in Canada over time, continuing to produce dancers of high standards. In the past, Natyakalalayam has taken an extended role in enriching the art of Bharathanatyam, through its exceptional performances on various stages around the world. These places include Sri Lanka, the Maldive Islands, Uganda, India, and the United States. In keeping with one of Guruji’s traditions, Natyakalalayam has become even more involved in its contributions to society. While promoting discipline and commitment in each student, Natyakalalayam also stresses the importance of contributing to cultural diversity in Canada and around the world. We are indeed grateful to be a part of a nation that facilitates the awareness of Bharathanatyam outside of its Indian origin. Our children have grown to love our institution for the traditions and morals it promotes. As a result, students have remained with Natyakalalayam for generations. Natyakalalayam has helped us understand the meaning of family values, culture and compassion for others which is the true essence of the art.

As Navaratri continues, I reflect on all my blessings. I’ve had the immense honour and most deep privilege to continue the legacy of my Guru K.N. Dandayuthapanipillai, as the Director of Natyakalalayam, Academy of Bharathanatyam for over 50 years.

Each year, I look forward to celebrating Vijayadasami with my students, their families and welcoming all our new students to Natyakalalayam!
