SFBCA Meeting Reminder - Casting in the Park
Meeting Date: Tuesday June 23rd, 6:30-8:30PM
Location: Morningside Park. Park at 2nd Parking lot, we will be located far west end of Park.

Whether you’re looking to sharpen your casting skills or learn the basics, Casting in the Park is a great opportunity to get some practice and spend time with fellow anglers.

For those new to the club, Casting in the Park is an informal drop-in gathering where members get together at Morningside Park in Scarborough to practice casting on the grass and enjoy some good conversation. Fly, spin, baitcasting, Spey, pin, or anything in between—everyone is welcome.

There are no formal lessons or structured classes. Simply bring your rod, make a few casts, and enjoy the evening. Experienced members are always happy to offer tips and assistance to anyone looking for a little help.

As always, non-members are welcome to stop by, meet the group, and see what our club is all about.

Passing on a message from our President, Ray Kendrick

Folks, it's my pleasure to announce the dates for this season's "Casting in the Park".

The dates will begin June 9th and end on Aug 18th, every other TUESDAY, for a total of 6 sessions

Times are 6:30 to 8:30 PM (drop in anytime)
June 9
June 23
July 7
July 21
Aug 4
Aug 18 (with a BBQ)

For those new to the group, Casting in the Park is simply an informal drop in event where you can mix and mingle with
other members of the club and practice your casting on the grass at Morningside Park in Scarborough, whether it's Fly, Spin, Bait, Spey. PIN....or anything in between.
There are no structured classes....just bring your rod and cast away. Members are always available to assist anyone who wants it.

LOCATION: Access the Park from Morningside, south of Morningside and Ellesmere.

"For those interested in the craft of making bamboo spey style rods (plus other types) a fellow rod-maker and I are currently organizing the next Canadian Cane gathering to be held on Saturday and Sunday, 29- 30 May 2027. The venue will be the historic Wellington County Museum in Fergus, Ontario, minutes from the trestle bridge access to the famed Grand River. When our new website is up and running I will post it here. In the meantime, if you wish to be added to our mailing list, please contact me and send along your email address."

A few highlights from our annual Spring Fishing Day and BBQ! Thanks to everyone who came out and made the day a success.

There were lots of fish caught this year. With the cold start to our general trout season, our rivers are still running very cold which means there are still lots of Steelhead still hanging around.

SFBCA Meeting Reminder
Meeting Date: Tuesday April 28th. 6:30-8:30PM

Location: The Birkdale Community Centre, 1299 Ellesmere Rd, Scarborough, ON M1P 2Y2

For our last indoor meeting of the 2025/26 winter/spring schedule, we’ll be tying one of the most innovative and effective caddis emerger patterns ever created.

Designed by the late Gary LaFontaine, this pattern imitates the natural gas bubble that forms around emerging caddis pupae as they rise to the surface. The result is a highly realistic fly that has fooled trout for decades and remains effective today.

Whether you’re new to fly tying or a seasoned tier, this is a great opportunity to learn a proven fish-catching pattern and pick up a few useful tying techniques along the way.

SFBCA Meteting Reminder

Meeting Date: Tuesday April 14thst. 6:30-8:30PM

Location: The Birkdale Community Centre, 1299 Ellesmere Rd, Scarborough, ON M1P 2Y2

For our April 14th club meeting we’ll be tying a highly effective and realistic pattern — the woven stonefly nymph!

Stoneflies are an important food source in many freestone rivers, and this woven pattern does an excellent job of imitating their segmented bodies and profile. Known for its durability and lifelike appearance, the woven stonefly is a worthwhile addition to any angler’s fly box, capable of taking trout year-round, and especially effective during cold, high-water conditions.

This session is perfect for tiers of all skill levels. We’ll go through the materials and techniques step-by-step, including the basics of weaving bodies and achieving clean, consistent segmentation.

Non-members are welcome to drop in and see what our club is all about as always. Hope to see you there!

Come out to our next club meeting on March 31st to tie one of the most effective and widely used nymph patterns out there — the Copper John!

Designed by John Barr, this fly is known for its slim profile, heavy weight, and flashy appeal, making it a go-to pattern for getting down deep and into the strike zone quickly. Whether you’re targeting trout in fast-moving rivers or still waters, the Copper John consistently produces results.

This is a great pattern for tiers of all skill levels. We’ll walk through the materials and techniques step-by-step, including working with wire bodies, wing cases, and proper proportions.
