My name is Signe Ronka and I'm the founder of Figure Skater Bootcamp Inc. In short, I was a former National and International medalist in the Junior level representing Canada at Junior Worlds, Junior Grand Prix's and the Junior Grand Prix Finals. I was often plagued with injuries one after another, which took me out of competition in 2006, where I finished top 10 in Senior Ladies at Nationals. I s

tarted this program in 2010, with the goal to help skaters train properly off the ice and prevent injuries. It all started with a couple of my own skaters training outside the rink and grew over time until I started up my own studio called Flexafit. I am a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and also NCCP 3 National Competitive Coach Certified. Together with my experience in skating and fitness, I designed a very sport specific training program that takes into consideration movements from our sport, energy systems used in skating and training techniques that are geared to on ice demands. One of the most common hidden errors that happen on the Axel and double axel - driving up in the skating knee too early on the follow through.

Skaters - in order for you to feel the transfer consistently and comfortably, you need to stay in the knee bend on the skating leg as your free leg starts to pass through then you rise up and transfer. If you come up too quickly you might feel like your body is flying forward with no control or difficulty to transfer.

The axel can take some people years to learn. Here I’m demonstrating a strong back spin position in my .ice skates.

The top three reasons your axel might be taking a long time to learn:

1. Back spin is still wobbly and uncomfortable to hit a proper checked skating side. This is a huge part of learning the axel and double jumps, without a strong backspin, your body is not well prepared for the air position.

2. Your edge pressure in a waltz jump back spin is too surface level. If you don’t have the correct grip on a waltz jump axel, it doesn’t matter how many of these drills you do, your axel will not be ready for a strong take off.

3. The positions on your take off edge are off in some major or small way. Mistakes on the entry edge can make or break the jump - is your alignment off, is the body working together, are things twisting in the wrong direction? These things need to be carefully analyzed so bad habits don’t form from the beginning.

My students who fix these foundational issues see their landing rate improve by 80% in just 4 weeks!
