My name is Signe Ronka and I'm the founder of Figure Skater Bootcamp Inc. In short, I was a former National and International medalist in the Junior level representing Canada at Junior Worlds, Junior Grand Prix's and the Junior Grand Prix Finals. I was often plagued with injuries one after another, which took me out of competition in 2006, where I finished top 10 in Senior Ladies at Nationals. I s

tarted this program in 2010, with the goal to help skaters train properly off the ice and prevent injuries. It all started with a couple of my own skaters training outside the rink and grew over time until I started up my own studio called Flexafit. I am a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and also NCCP 3 National Competitive Coach Certified. Together with my experience in skating and fitness, I designed a very sport specific training program that takes into consideration movements from our sport, energy systems used in skating and training techniques that are geared to on ice demands. FLEXAFIT® is the ultimate package of off-ice training for figure skaters. Not only does it include Figure Skater Bootcamp, but all the other essentials of training for figure skaters such as off-ice jumps/plyometrics, dance fusion, and flexibility/stretch. You can get everything you need for off-ice training here at FLEXAFIT® with the best qualified instructors. Check out our programs here at FLEXAFIT® to get a detailed description of each class. Give me a shout if you have any questions about our programs and services we offer. I would love to provide you with the appropriate guidance. Looking forward to meeting you!

Ankle Stability: The Missing Piece in Consistent Landings

When you struggle to land your jumps consistently, we often look at rotation, jump height, air position, and technique. But sometimes the problem starts where a lot of people don’t ever look — at the ankle.

Before a skater can absorb and control a landing, the ankle needs to recognize where the body is in space and respond quickly enough to stabilize it. It also needs the proper range of motion to lift up with good form on the take offs.

Try this simple assessment: Have the skater stand on one leg in bare feet in their landing position for 20–30 seconds. Watch the ankle. Does it wobble? Does the foot collapse inward? Do they grip with their toes, move their arms, or shift their upper body to stay balanced?
These compensations can tell us that the skater needs more ankle control before adding greater speed, height, and rotation. From here we would also do an ankle test to measure range of motion.

Once we know the starting point, I work through three progressions:
1. Hold — Establish a strong single-leg landing position and maintain alignment without excessive ankle movement.
2. Control — Add small movements, reaches, or changes in body position while keeping the ankle and landing side stable.
3. React — Progress to hops and landing variations where the ankle has to quickly stabilize the body on contact.
The goal isn’t simply stronger ankles. We want the skater’s ankle, foot, knee, and hip working together automatically so that when they come down from a jump, their body knows how to find and control the landing.

If you need help to diagnose your jump from a deeper perspective, book an assessment with me: [email protected].

The most common axel progression is waltz jump to back spin. But did you know that the next progression is not to just go attempt an axel straight away! There are 5 axel progressions we use in FLEXAFIT to perfect the axel and learn rotation easier than to just throw yourself up into the axel straight away. Not only does this cause wild positions but lots of bad falls!

Join our jump classes to learn the FLEXAFIT progressions off ice so that you can apply the exact same ones on the ice. Watch how fast your mind to body connection will form!

I do assessments with skaters of all levels multiples times a week. The very first thing we check is ankle mobility.

Did you know ankle mobility is critical to not only being able to bend into the ankles on the ice for more power and speed but also for proper alignment on jumps and fitness exercises. This is one major overlooked area of skaters training. Not only will you be able to jump higher with better range of motion in the ankles, but you will also prevent injuries caused by misalignment, repetitions in incorrect form and compensation due to limitation of range.

If you are always questioning why your jumps aren’t high enough or you want to initiate rotation before jumping, book your assessment with me today and I can help do all the checks and balances for your alignment to set you up with a great off ice plan. [email protected]

Ever wonder why you can’t land your double or triple salchow? Have you gone back the basics of the three turn and how the checks need to be set at each part of the turn?

Go back to this drill and feel the check, then ask yourself does my salchow feel this checked when I jump the single, double, triple? If the answer is no, then try going back to three turn circle drills with the free leg tight at first and then work your way to extended free leg.

For more salchow drills subscribe to FLEXAFIT EDGE - online.flexafit.com

Or work with us one on one virtually off ice to help fix your salchow 💪 [email protected]

Every skater needs to learn how to use their ankles, knees and hips to initiate the power pull on the ice without using the free leg or upper body to create momentum. This will go a long way not only for skating skills but for jumps and spins!
