Making the right decisions in training

Learning how to be flexible with choosing the right weight on the bar is a skill that is often overlooked

My general framework

Take your realistic target and hit 94-95% of that target and when you hit that lwu (it should be a great indicator of where the topset lies)

If your last warmup is too heavy or too light, making the right decision to load the right weight on the bar at the appropriate exertion is the key to making sustainable progress long term

“Off-season” can exist or be used

But where I see it going wrong is not actually using that time to work on qualities/bottlenecks and prioritizing building strength, working on skill or work capacity

Instead, I see lifters oftentimes half ass the sessions and externals “since there is less of a timeline “

Ensure that your non specific blocks or periods have a goal and an end date with some form of a test to see if that time was useful or determine if the strategy worked

Or else you get to may realizing you’ve just taken time off

How We Broke Past A Longstanding Bench Plateau w/

Coles notes

1) Less fluctuations from topset to backdown work (i.e small % drops)

2) More density/straight sets at higher rpe

3) Not having big changes in prescription between primary/secondary/tertiary

Most of all her bench days touched above 80-90% very little work below 80% if at all

3)

Eliminate Cognitive Dissonance

An undervalued or underlooked aspect in hiring a coach in my opinion

I remember first hiring a coach thinking all that mattered was the technique, programming matters the most (which it does)

But as a coach being able to see the goals of@your lifter and seeing if it matches their actions and not being afraid to tell them plainly

You said you wanted “x” but you aren’t even doing “y”

Is an under looked value in coaching

January/February Highlights

95kg bench single (2.5kg PR over comp best comfortably)
nikolic 305Kg squat double pr , slowly chipping away toward that 325+ kg squat

just prs every block at this point 405lbs for a triple, her comp pr is 402lbs
dg 57.5 kg single matches her comp pr with room!

making smooth work of 210lbs bench matching her comp pr with room

hitting his comp max from october for a triple with 212.5kg

Super pumped with all the prs the team has been hitting!

Constantly adjusting the plan based on a bad workout or even a week of not amazing lifting is ruining your progress

Sometimes you gotta ride out a block or two and make notes without actually making immediate changes

The more you tinker the less you find out what really works

It’s to think about progress in the long term and understand training Will fluctuate

It doesn’t mean you aren’t progressing

And as a coach knowing when or if a change is necessary

3 Key Tips For Better Communication As A Coach

In the past, I would immediately be ready to solve problems and make assumptions during the coaching process and listen very little (yes I was naive)

But believe it or not, not all athletes should be coached the same

You coach humans not robots

1) Does your coach lead with curiosity, do they ask questions before making assumptions

2) Do they give you a voice or an opportunity to communicate how they are feeling about the plan or just their lifting in general (this is your time to listen)

3) Do you feel involved in decision making process?

Obviously there’s a limit to this, you did hire a coach to make decisions but that shouldn’t negate that you shouldn’t be involved in some decisions

Spreadsheet and programming/biomechanics is cool but the soft skills are just as important

Believe it or not

You don’t need to be in the gym for 3 hr sessions in Powerlifting

Yes if you compete at highest level, your sessions may naturally be longer due to the amount of work required

But in general 90min to 2hrs is plenty of time provided you stay focused and avoid doom scrolling between sets

And if a set of 7 gasses you out… to the point you need a 10 min break (you likely have other issues to worry about)

This is one of the reasons I love powerlifting since you can juggle a lot of life and still excel to a high level in this sport

Team Highlights for December/January so far

200kg bench double with room to spare (max is 204kg to 220kg is there in 2026)

hitting pr triple with 205kg (comp max is only 212.5kg a few months ago)

170KG double squat pr (her previous comp pr was 162.5 and missed 170 KG at easterns in 2025 September) 185 kg or 405lbs barrier will be crossed soon
adaptivesp 260 KG double (10KG PR) with room!! Christian is def going to push for that nats qt in 2026 after being plagued with injuries

competed this weekend and finally crossed the 500lb squat barrier (10KG meet pr) and lots of room to grow provided that the meet directors remove the safety on squats 🤣)

Having Fun Matters

If the old grumpy lifter tells you its all about willpower and discipline, they aren’t entirely wrong but at the same time mustering that willpower is finite (you may need it for some parts of your prep

But at the end of the day, enjoyment and satisfaction will ultimately yield better day to day efforts (which is going to lead to more consistent efforts)

These consistent efforts will compound and lead to more progress

Phasic training allows for that periods of pushing and periods of non specific work that keeps things enjoyable and less stale
