It’s your club.
If you smile when you see ‘road closed’.
If distance covered is less important than adventures had.
If you prefer the stones instead of the smooth.
If you wear mud, dust and dirt as a badge of honour.
If you take time to learn the stories of where you ride.
If community matters more than competition.
It’s your club.

Patiently waiting.
At the end of a gravel trail in a 150 year old barn our equipment lies shielded from the worst of the Canadian winter.
It’s been four restful months but in a few weeks cycling adventures ‘off the beaten track’ begin again.
Let us know what gravel rides you have planned in 2023.

Growing the family.
‘Family’ is a powerful word but one used by riders to describe the bond they shared during our Almaguin adventure this month.
The support through challenges, the common understanding, the feeling of community. Not just amongst riders but from our volunteer and support crews such as as well.
As we reflect on the event and review the learnings we’re overwhelmed by the positive feedback using words like these.
We’re excited to welcome more people into the Ghost Gravel family. Sign up for updates about our next adventures at ghostgravel.com

Part 2.
With temperatures peaking the longest stretch along Machar Strong beckoned. A time for introspection as the gravel receded and asphalt returned. At this point some ending their adventure whilst others pressed on, comforted knowing and were always close.
For those continuing more wild landscapes the reward along Chemical Road, a former rail route for logging operations. One final rest stop by shimmering Kawawaymog Lake access to Algonquin Park then a particularly cruel climb straight after.
Eventually the end in view. A local band accompanying shared stories of courage and togetherness as gifts and prizes from and dispatched.
.
Lots to consider as we plan for 2023 but in the meantime thanks to all who made this event possible. We’re excited for what’s to come.

Part 1 of 2.
As day broke over 70 riders gathered on dampened gravel for our second annual event in the Almaguin Highlands in support of .
Our founder Matt opened proceedings, followed by the land acknowledgement and the rider and pioneer settler blessing from the local pastor. Time to .
Expertly led by , groups navigated ‘Charcoal Town’ then transported onto the first tranche of gravel. The forest initially keeping a respectful distance until gradually enveloping riders as they began Jersualem Road.
The season had been kind to this trail, the sand and rocks providing a fast platform out to the first rest stop at Swan Lake, where the vibrant van was ready to serve.
Reenergized it was time for our namesake the Old Nipissing aka Ontario’s Ghost Road. Remnants of townships including Rye and Wattenwyle spied by the observant. Pioneer cemeteries, abandoned cabins, a post office watching from the undergrowth.
At 55km scenic Magnetawan lifted spirits as it has for generations. The Ghost Gravel truck dispensing fresh espresso by the water’s edge, alongside , and sustenance, giving riders a moment to reflect on challenges overcome and those ahead.
Part 2 follows.

Beautifully remote.
Shots of our first rest stop at Little Swan Lake this weekend, coming after the first ATV trail along Jerusalem Road.
They perfectly illustrate how remote and relatively untouched large sections of this route are. And just how logistically challenging creating this course has been.
Many thanks to our on-route support team , , , and whose collaboration and commitment makes this event possible.
We hope all our riders enjoy disappearing ‘off the beaten track’ with us. Sign up for our newsletters at ghostgravel.com to be first to hear about future events.

Waiting a while at Wattenwyl ghost town.
Once a small farming community at the southern end of the Lount township, today Wattenwyl is almost entirely lost to nature.
Said to be named after a village in Switzerland, others claim it was an interpretation of ‘wait a while’ given it was where Swiss settlers patiently waited for their mail. This mail was being sorted in the house of Frederick and Anna Egger who immigrated in 1875 from Basel.
The story goes that during these waiting periods romance would sometimes blossom, with the younger settlers getting to know their township neighbours.
We’re excited to share Wattenwyl and other ‘ghost’ settlements with our riders during our Almaguin Highlands event and others upcoming.

Like-minded.
Taking a moment to express our gratitude to all our August 20th event partners.
Each of these varied organizations has bought into our vision and pledged their support, whether products, prizing or expertise. And we’re tremendously thankful.
From carbonated drinks to ATV guides to clothing, without their partnership our event would not be possible.
Please take the time to check them out.
